The things you are missing can be added easily (you are likely missing the ParkSense if you don't have the backup camera, since they are sold as a package . . . . But I'm somewhat jealous. I'd have liked to have the sunroof on mine. Save your money for useful things and don't bother messing with the brake. If you need new pads I'd use OEM - they really improved them as of the middle of the 2012 model year.

I'd wager that the mechanism is dislocated/broken/whatever

On my '11 I had a lever ahead of the recliner release that adjusted seat height.

4.3 Radio / U connect
bramfrank replied to QueArlos's topic in Audio, Infotainment Navigation, MyGig, UConnect, etc.
The camera can be added to the 4.3 using a 3rd party device that costs a lot more than it should. Adding uConnect navigation would require you to swap out a whole bunch of parts - in theory not complicated, but it depends on whether your vehicle already has Sirius and Automatic Air conditioning and it is pricey to do with factory new parts; more reasonable with salvage bits. As much as Fred came off as sarcastic the reality is that it probably is simplest to trade the vehicle and get what you wanted - or at least the 8.4" display. -
2013 Journey 2.4 and possible head gasket...
bramfrank replied to Ed Ciessau's topic in Engine & Transmission
Why? He has a brand new gasket and his head's been planed. Should be good for another however many miles. Of course, if one is looking for an excuse to replace a vehicle . . . . -
Backup cameras are mandatory as of the 2018 model year - get ready for all sorts of accidents as a result. I know that when I first got my camera going I would tend to look at the screen without checking around and often would cut off pedestrians and cars crossing behind - you need to train yourself to use the screen only to gauge the back end of the vehicle. On a positive note it certainly removes the guesswork of the exact end of the vehicle when backing into a parking spot. I can fit the DJ into a shorter spot now than when I needed to guesstimate exactly how much space there was between my bumper and that of the vehicle behind me. Sometimes the space allows me to park in spots that are amazingly short . . . . .

All Journeys manufactured after 2012 are supposed to be prewired for the camera. But good luck finding the connector out back - I certainly couldn't, but the good news is that I had purchased the 2011-2012 kit, which came with the cabling, and ran it to the front where I had the dealer do the connections while he activated the sales code.

Can't Unlock Maps
bramfrank replied to lanc747's topic in Audio, Infotainment Navigation, MyGig, UConnect, etc.
The missing fuse is pretty obvious - you said all the fuses were tested, so either one of them wasn't put back, or put it in the wrong place. -
Save the $110 and skip the radio (which this nice dealer was going to sell you at full retail). Start by pulling the radio out from the dash and reseating the two smaller telephone-like plugs in back - those are the USB connections; one goes to the Bluetooth module and the other to the USB jack in the console - do not exchange their positions, I have no clue what might happen, if anything, but their addresses may be hard coded. If you can get to the BT module (conveniently - NOT - located above the steering column, under the dash and a pain to access) I would try reseating it's connector as well. If that doesn't work then buy yourself a new (used) Bluetooth module from a scrap yard (check LKQ) for cheap and put it in and continue to drive.
-
They changed my BT module today because the audio was intermittent, and until now I was able to get it to work by banging on the dash, suggesting a bad connection, though I'd have thought it would be in the wire harness before the module, the 30 or so miles since I got the DJ back today were almost uneventful. Hopefully changing the module will resolve my issue. If not, then they can troubleshoot further at FCA's expense. What drove the service visit was a growing looseness in the steering which they seem to have fixed by changing a link somewhere in the steering/suspension on the left side. I did have to go into the settings menu to set the announcements back to brief. It was unsettling to me to have the module treating me like a 2 year old. Every time I went to make a voice-activated call the system displayed the help menu and once the system initiated the connection, the disembodied voice reminded me of how to hang up after a call. Very annoying.

Can't Unlock Maps
bramfrank replied to lanc747's topic in Audio, Infotainment Navigation, MyGig, UConnect, etc.
Of the dozens of radios people have asked me to help them with not a single one has been a problem to resuscitate - there is a thread which details how to do this on this site. Anything more and the problem is not going to be the one that affects most owners and as such not something you can blame on FCA per se. My last Journey was GPS-less and I had a higher end Garmin stand-alone navigator that had voice recognition stuck to the windshield above the mirror and ran the power cable through the headliner and right side roof pillar down to be connected to the fuse box behind the glove box - no buttons to push, it was activated by speaking the configurable trigger phrase. It was very inconspicuous and very convenient. A friend whose Journey has the enhanced roof console did something similar and had his Garmin navigator installed in the eyeglass holder and can make it disappear by folding it up into the roof.. -
Can't Unlock Maps
bramfrank replied to lanc747's topic in Audio, Infotainment Navigation, MyGig, UConnect, etc.
I have yet to run into a navigator displaying the 'can't unlock maps' message that couldn't be recovered with fresh mapping. But that doesn't excuse FCA for not dealing with this problem since it started appearing in the 2013+ versions of the navigator. As to having an extended warranty . . . . modern cars are stuffed full of microprocessors which are sensitive to bad grounds, weak batteries and such. And dealers have a terrible history in terms of their diagnostic capabilities, in a large part because there can be a myriad range of causes for many faults and determining the exact cause can require a lot of insight that most car techs don't have. To that end you wind up paying for the dealer to thrash about trying to fix a problem or worse, paying for them to change expensive parts that don't actually solve the problem. Having a warranty puts those charges where they belong; in the manufacturer's hands. One thing I'm seeing a lot of in the forums is where the vehicle acts up and the owner changes the battery (which is located in a truly idiotic location. It should probably be inside the vehicle in back the way it is in my daughter's Pontiac G5 and my nephew's Charger wagon) and it turns out that the 'smart regulator' on the alternator has given up the ghost and it affects all sorts of systems in the vehicle. A bad battery shouldn't kill the alternator. -
Can't Unlock Maps

Your dealer's an idiot. Reloading the maps DOES work. What he is doing is reloading the firmware. I hope you have an extended warranty. -
Can't Unlock Maps
bramfrank replied to lanc747's topic in Audio, Infotainment Navigation, MyGig, UConnect, etc.
Well, I suppose the firs thing to do is to correct some of your misconceptions; First of all, an open circuit is not the same as a blown fuse. You are from BC, which is often considered to be a damp environment. Your electrical issues could well be due to corrosion or a bad crimp on a wire or cold solder joint in the airbag module. Secondly, the 'Can't unlock maps' problem has nothing at all to do with a wiring harness matter, but rather a glitch on the GPS card inside the TGM, likely due to a hardware design issue that leads to memory corruption in the unit. It doesn't have to be replaced, but rather the maps simply re-installed. And while there was a recall for the 2014-2015 radios, it did not resolve anything, so consider yourself lucky to not have had to visit the dealer to apply a useless Band-Aid to the system. Your dash cam issue is more likely due to the dash cam than it is to your vehicle. -
A grand? I put on a set of 19" Bridgestone H/L 422 ECOPIA tires and they cost me the equivalent of about $685 US installed and balanced. And you can get tires cheaper.. Even the original Kumo tires are about $180 each at sams club . . . . .
-
Is your vehicle equipped with automatic air conditioning?
-
Bluetooth is a module located under the dash, above the steering column and connects to one of the two connectors used for USB on the rear of the TGM (head unit). You can always try to unplug one end or the other of the cable that goes between the module and the TGM - I know that my vehicle has developed an intermittent which cuts my BT audio off and when I tap the dash it comes back. Annoying, but less annoying to me than taking the dash apart to check a couple of plugs - and worse, it could be the cable itself. The BT module itself seems to retail for about $350 US, but they can be had from places lie LQK and independent scrap yards and they show up on Ebay from time to time for less. Often much less. Of course it could also be a bad cable . . . . . . .

looking at 2011 DJ
bramfrank replied to klee7013's topic in Buying, Leasing, Ordering & Competing Products
Maybe I'll consider selling my rustproofed Canadian '14 FWD Crossroad (Canadia crossroads come with more standard equipment than US ones) with about 25K miles, brand new tires, heated seats and steering wheel, backup camera, the balance of the factory extended zero deductible 7 year/115K km warranty that runs to December 2021 and a whole lot more to someone in the US for about $18KUS!!! And you get DRLs to boot!! -
Replacing the Alpine System
bramfrank replied to Adam5498's topic in Audio, Infotainment Navigation, MyGig, UConnect, etc.
It isn't exactly an Alpine system. They have Alpine speakers connected to the uConnect TGM, which is manufactured by Panasonic. It is possible to replace the TGM with aftermarket equipment, but it comes at a cost in functionality because the system also controls the air conditioning and other features in the vehicle. -
Satellite Radio Installation
bramfrank replied to angie714's topic in Audio, Infotainment Navigation, MyGig, UConnect, etc.
It certainly isn't an add-on. Your Journey didn't come with Sirius/XM because the trim level you bought doesn't have it. if it did, not only would you not have to do anything, but factory equipped vehicles come with a year of free service And you certainly don't have to go to Best Buy to have it transferred in any case. You would just phone the Sirius customer service number that so thoughtfully appears on the channel 0 screen and give them your account information. You now have several options; You can install a satellite antenna (it is possible to replace the present antenna with a satellite compatible one and to run a wire from that antenna through the headliner and down the roof pillar and feed it to the radio). But you'll also have to replace the radio with one equipped for the service. You can usually find them on eBay or buy one from a scrap yard. Note that newer radios require an unlock code - your dealer COULD give the code to you for free, but if not there are people (on this board) who have been known to helpfully provide this information without charge. You can buy a radio from BestBuy and stick it in your armrest - plug the audio output into the jack in the armrest and listen away. If your vehicle has Bluetooth you can simply buy a BT equipped satellite radio receiver and antenna and connect to the vehicle that way - or you can download the Sirius app and use your data plan to get the music, though Spotify is a LOT better. Or you can load up an iPod and listen to that. The acoustic quality of SiriusXM's system is less than stellar. -
They could still have stamped the chassis for in-vehicle storage by setting it up so the tire could be slid out toward the rear below that 3rd row seat - the tire well would be BELOW where the 3rd row seats are located, since the tire is already in that space, albeit hanging from the winch instead of sitting in the spare tire wheel well.
-
I've wondered why the design dweebs at FCA didn't invert the stamping for the spare wheel so that it could have been stored underfloor inside the vehicle the way it is in my daughter's Pontiac G5? (While they were at it, I suppose they could have put the battery in the back as well, the way her car and many others have them). If they'd done that then the cost of the winch could have been avoided and the wheel assembly would have been nice and clean and dry in the event of a flat. AND, the tire itself would have been more accessible for inflation checks and less prone to decay because of exposure and simpler and a LOT cleaner to access in order to change. It isn't as if the wheel you replaced can be winched up under the body, which begets a suggestion I am offering that has worked for me in the past: Roll by your local tire store and ask them for a plastic bag of the sort they use for customer tires and store it near the jack under the cargo floor. If (when?) you have a flat or other issue that requires you to install the spare, put the dirty and possibly wet wheel you removed in the bag and don't mess up the interior of your DJ (this applies to ANY car, of course).

Problem with hands-free system
bramfrank replied to chaegle's topic in Audio, Infotainment Navigation, MyGig, UConnect, etc.
Mine is starting to act up - if I hit a bump the audio from the BT module sometimes dies. If I restart the vehicle it usually comes back. Not sure whether it is the TGM (which isn't warrantied) or the BT module (which is). And, of course like any intermittent issue, it will not do this when the dealer is watching. I suppose I may have to stick the dashcam back into the car to record this, just to get video to show the dealer.
