Recall R03 New Ignition Switch & Key FOB's...
bramfrank replied to brwengel's topic in Recalls & Technical Service Bulletins
Check eBay - or you might find one at a very reasonable price at a scrap yard. -
Question for Americans with the 8.4" screen and a Sirius subscription: I have my sub for all three possibilities; Nav, Radio and Travel-link. The dealer screen reflects this and Sirius confirmed it too. I do get the sports game notices and such and I can tune the stupid weather and traffic channels for the however many cities they provide them for, like I need weather and traffic for New York City or LA!! And after a few weeks without traffic on my navigator the green dot lit up and now I can see traffic!!! According to the manual I should also see settings for Travel-link in the Sirius sub-menu under settings, but nothing about travel-link shows there - do your US radios show settings for the service? I only ask because the book says it should be there and the unit definitely has the Travel-link subscription enabled. Comments?

Upgrade 8.4 to 8.4n
bramfrank replied to Jstmahoney's topic in Audio, Infotainment Navigation, MyGig, UConnect, etc.
To avoid confusion I simply stated up front that my radio had been changed and that I needed the subscription transferred - they do not normally transfer subscriptions between radios - manufacturer supplied radios are the exception. It was very simple and smooth. -
There is no accessible engineering menu - there is a 'dealer information menu', which, as previously indicated is accessed by pressing the driver's up AND down temperature buttons, along with the front defroster button for 10 seconds. Firmware version for CTP13+ radios is 14.something - if you have Nav, that subsystem is at 5.12.

Upgrade 8.4 to 8.4n
bramfrank replied to Jstmahoney's topic in Audio, Infotainment Navigation, MyGig, UConnect, etc.
Done it. If you have an 8.4 with SiriusXM you already have the GPS antenna. You will need a new radio module, which as dhh said, resides behind the air conditioning controls - the swap takes about 3 minutes. The radio can be purchased used online at prices that are typically in the range of $800 to $1500 or more - and you will not have a warranty from Chrysler (though it may be possible to make a 'backroom deal' with your dealer should you have problems). Radios manufactured before 2013 usually do not need to be unlocked (if they've been updated with newer firmware a code may be required). Later ones do. PM me for details on unlocking - it can be done for free and only requires the serial number of the radio (on a sticker, or visible from the dealer menu, which is accessible even if the radio is locked) and the VIN of the vehicle that you are installing it in. With the exception of the channel presets, all of the features (heated seat control, backup camera and so on) are enabled in the body controller, so the radio doesn't play a part in making those features work - you will need to call SiriusXM to move your subscription (if you have one) to the new radio once you have it installed. The radio ID is found on Sirius channel 0. -
2015 Crossroads AWD Pricing?
bramfrank replied to eightfingers's topic in Buying, Leasing, Ordering & Competing Products
Well, according to what I just saw, the price of the vehicle is $28,217 - the navigation option was checked and it isn't on the OP's feature list. So it looks like the price was 'right', but not 'extreme'. As to leasing, that buyback is on the high side, so you'll likely be getting a new car in 2 years rather than taking the vehicle over. -
Shifting hard/ Possible Buy Back issue
bramfrank replied to Denver Alyse's topic in Engine & Transmission
Interesting that the OP deleted his/her posts in this topic - I guess they were somewhat embarrassed by their claim that a harsh shift could be a buyback issue. Mine downshifts on decelleration when I would prefer that it not, and if I shift from park before the RPMs come down after a cold start it will be 'harsh', but the transmission works reasonably well. -
What your insurance company didn't tell you is that they'll cover the repair for as long as you keep them as your insurance company . . . . . so you are handcuffed to them until you change the vehicle. Make sure that you get a WRITTEN commitment that their sub-par repair is covered by them in perpetuity, whether or not you insure through them. And I suspect that they aren't the least expensive game in town, so you've probably got incentive to change.
-
Let your insurance company know in writing that you believe their repair was deficient and that you hold them accountable for any future issues that may be wiring related without limit. Splices are rarely done properly by shops. As to your experience - I know that it sucks to have the bloom off the rose ... someone scratched the rear quarter panel on my ride and I'd not likely have noticed if I didn't pick up a nail in the tire on that corner of the vehicle the other day.

Recall R03 New Ignition Switch & Key FOB's...

If people would simply not load up their key rings with large chunks of metal and hang them from the fob it wouldn't have been an issue at all. -
Uconnect issues
bramfrank replied to Number-Six's topic in Audio, Infotainment Navigation, MyGig, UConnect, etc.
I suggest starting by cycling power (remove the negative power terminal under the hood) for 30 minutes. This should reset the unit, in case something had glitched. As to staying on, mine does that when the phone is connected to it and there's a message being processed. I *might* be normal and something you've simply never noticed before. -
2011 Journey - Do I give it back or keep it?
bramfrank replied to Draver17's topic in Owner Impressions
He's in Canada - we get ripped off on extended warranties and there is no lifetime available (which is why I suggested the 7/160 - it is the longest one they offer). -
UConnect NAV Cant Unlock MAPS?
bramfrank replied to Blackout's topic in Audio, Infotainment Navigation, MyGig, UConnect, etc.
Gary; If they can't get it running, you might simply want to go out and find an RE2 (same device, but without the navigation) that can be had for a couple of hundred dollars - you just swap your Siruis subscription into the new radio (assuming you have an active subscription on your current one) and with the exception of not having the nav, everything works as was . . . . . If the radio is from a '13 or '14 you will need to solicit an unlock code- there is a member here who can help you with that. Changing the radio itself isn't complicated - about 10 minutes in total. -
2011 Journey - Do I give it back or keep it?
bramfrank replied to Draver17's topic in Owner Impressions
Given your situation, I wonder whether you shouldn't be shooting for a trade if you can negotiate a great deal (it's why I went from a 2011 SE Plus to a Crossroad in December) - The dealer did everything he could to get me to switch and in the end made it so sweet a deal that I simply could not resist. In part because they don't sell many 5 passenger Journeys and this one was an albatross around their neck . . . . and I in no way wanted that 3rd row of seats, needing the storage. This time around buy the 7/160 bumper to bumper warranty. -
2010 Journey- all electrical going off while driving
bramfrank replied to titus's topic in Electrical, Battery & Charging
Anything that affects vehicle safety (visibility, driveability and so on) is probably fodder for a vehicle recall - your headlights and tail lights going out is a potentially fatal defect. YOU need to file the report - Chrysler will not. And the life you save by filing that report could possibly be that of a fellow forum member. Go to Transport Canada's web site and fill in a defect report. Describe the problem completely and the circumstances under which it occurs. Here is the URL with all sorts of information and both phone numbers to call to file a report and a link for filing your report online: https://wwwapps.tc.gc.ca/Saf-Sec-Sur/7/PCDB-BDPP/fc-cp.aspx?lang=eng -
2011 Journey - Do I give it back or keep it?
bramfrank replied to Draver17's topic in Owner Impressions
It is not worth Not $8K in trade up here. He doesn't have that much now given the mileage - at 200K he'll have nothing. Now, he will find a private buyer for more money - but not as a trade with almost 100K on it. This is not about value, but reliability. And with expensive electronics and no extended warranty there is some doubt about the financial viability of hanging on to the unit, which is why the question is being asked. I've not run one beyond 60K (I rust-proofed mine and babied it, but even so, if you are taking it past about 160K, with all those electronics and our bad roads you have to wonder). -

US dealers are a lot more desperate than Canadian ones. All things being equal, if you really can return it, why not just lease another one and keep paying the same monthly amount? -
Rotors might be gone, but check the pictures
bramfrank replied to Marius's topic in Brake, Chassis & Suspension
I sympathise - and I believe you have the basis for a claim - but having been through this with them in the past I know that Chrysler does a miserable job of standing behind their customers - their point will likely be that your claim, if any is against the dealer that messed up . . . and their fallback position will be that their liability is solely for the original problem and that they don't accept responsibility for consequential damage. You may eventually get a settlement, but they'll insist it is only a goodwill one. -
Uconnect keeps rebooting
bramfrank replied to Excedrin1997's topic in Audio, Infotainment Navigation, MyGig, UConnect, etc.
I suppose you could pull the radio out - it isn't hard - but disconnecting the negative is simpler. Or . . . you could roll by your dealer. -
UConnect NAV Cant Unlock MAPS?
bramfrank replied to Blackout's topic in Audio, Infotainment Navigation, MyGig, UConnect, etc.
Thank you for clarifying. Of course you can push back that date by purchasing an extended warranty . . . . -
If it reinitialised the system your settings, favourites and such would be lost and the radio locked - and they are not. That is where the problem probably lies - something messes up the operating parameters and there's no way to do a full factory default in the field. So all the updating in the world isn't going to help. You'd think it wouldn't be hard to write a program that would copy the key variables (Sirius ID, Garmin ID, Radio S/N and such) to temporary memory, erase everything and then reflash the radio with the data that would be found in the program key - then they'd have to enter the unlock code, reinstall the maps and THEN you'd have a factory fresh radio. uConnect has a few such stupidities - like the locked Gracenotes database for which no there seems to be no way to update without going into the radio and electrically interfacing with the circuitry - and that involves soldering to the board from what I've read) - so unless your newest music (as in since about 2011) has album art and proper tags, IT won't get the treatment, while albums from the 1950s do.

UConnect NAV Cant Unlock MAPS?
bramfrank replied to Blackout's topic in Audio, Infotainment Navigation, MyGig, UConnect, etc.
Not update, reinstall. And how is your 2013 more than 3 years old? They weren't delivering '13s in February of 2012 -
UConnect NAV Cant Unlock MAPS?
bramfrank replied to Blackout's topic in Audio, Infotainment Navigation, MyGig, UConnect, etc.
You know, the timing is VERY suspicious - it would seem to appear that some units die at the one year point - who knows what combination of features/settings are key? We are not privy to the rate of failure nor do we know if other vehicles with RB5 radios have the same problem or whether it is an interaction between the GPS and Sirius applications, but it SHOULD be a priority to resolve. Altogether too many companies are completely lackadaisical about software that isn't in the mission critical arena - they make their clients guinea pigs and beta testers because they are too lazy or incompetent to properly and fully test what they write - now we have hackable cars and all sorts of reliability issues. It seems to me that Chrysler needs to red flag the problem - it sounds like a fatal software flaw and is going to get very expensive for the company - and after the basic warranties are up will probably end up the subject of a class action suit. I don't know about the US, but there is no statute of limitations or warranty exceptions for latent defects - Chrysler would lose this one big time it that's what the story is. They don't tell you what they changed in the firmware updates, but if it's been fixed with the mid 2014 release and they didn't make it mandatory, that's a shame. I will be updating mine this weekend, just in case. -
UConnect NAV Cant Unlock MAPS?

My comment was aimed at Larryl -
If you plan to hang onto it, you might want to consider one of Mopar's extended warranty programs from Chrysler . . . . there's lots of expensive electronics in this thing.
