crrroger
Hi Guys, New member here from Utah. Bought a "showroom" 2009 Journey R/T in March of this year with 42K miles on it. A Jaguar dealer in Detroit, MI had taken it in on trade on a new Jag. I found it online and flew to Detroit to pick it up and drove it back to Utah. I have put approximately 10K on it since and have grown to like it a lot. It is a worthy addition to my MOPAR "fleet" which includes a 2004 Chrysler Pacifica, a 2014 Chrysler 300, A 2016 Dodge Dart, and a 2016 Dodge Challenger. Now to my problem. Yesterday while driving in town I made a medium acceleration start from a traffic signal and heard a loud clunking sound from the rear. Immediately heard and felt additional noises and what felt like lurches in the drive train....again from the rear. I stopped in a parking lot and checked under and around the car but could not see anything. The engine seemed to be running fine. I was three or ffour miles from home so decided to see if it would make it...which it did....clunking and lurching all the way. I am totally unfamiliar with any all wheel drive system so don't have any idea what the problem may be except to assume there must be some type of a rear differential and perhaps it is "out". Does anyone have an idea what I am up against? There is a small dealer here in town but I don't know anything about them. I am very familiar with a larger dealer 40 miles away and have confidence in them. I don't know whether to take a chance on the local guys or flat bed my Journey 40 miles to a larger dealer. Any ideas or suggestions gratefully appreciated.
OhareFred
Well, the AWD system can be complex so going to the dealer is the correct step. Why do you not trust the local dealer? Bad experience? If not, you may be bypassing a great dealership because they are a small outfit. Give them the opportunity to either earn your trust or your disgust. I was new in town and went to them hoping to strike up a relationship. The salesman and sales manager lied to me and I knew it. Left a bad taste in my mouth for the whole place. Maybe I'll go talk to them again. Thanks for the reply.
hockey_puck
I've found that while the sales people can be absolute slime scum sucking rat bastards, sometimes the service department can be quite good. While I love the service department where I bought my Journey, BUT those life forms lower than an amoeba in sales, kept on phoning me, even after asking them to stop, hoping I'd come by and trade my Journey in on a new one. This continued until I marched into the sales area and told them I was going to come back with a 20 pound sledge hammer and fix their phone system. jkeaton
jkeaton
Agree. Your issue is best to be handled by the service department.

crrroger
A follow up to my original post. I flatbedded my Journey to an independent shop near my home that I had confidence in.....not the local Mopar dealer. They determined that the power transfer unit had a 2" hole in the case which required a replacement of the entire unit. They obtained one from Chrysler and installed it. The damaged core was returnable for a 500.00 credit and my out of pocket expense was 2,360.00. jkeaton
