Mbookey20
Hey All! I have an odd situation I’m hoping someone here may be able to help shed some light on. I recently bought a used 2018 Dodge Journey GT. It’s supposed to have a backup camera. According to the VIN it has a backup camera. However, it 100% does not have a backup camera for some reason. I’ve reached out to the dealership, but they’ve been 0 help since we purchased the car and insisted the car does have a backup camera and the parts department said they can’t order the part from Mopar (they weren’t clear on why). I’ve called Mopar directly and they said there is no backup camera currently offered for my vehicle (not sure how that’s possible). I’ve also contacted Dodge’s customer service department directly and they weren’t able to resolve anything and directed me back to Mopar again. What I'm trying to determine is if there is truly no way for me to get an oem Mopar camera that can be installed and integrated into my Journey (has the 8.4 display). Should the 2011-2017 Mopar backup camera (part #: 82212553AC) be compatible with my vehicle? I’m at a loss of what to do from here. Thanks for your help! Summer Solstice
Well, first question first. You say that the dealer insists that the vehicle has a camera. Did they show it to you? Did you have them show you how to set it and use it? It takes just a little configuration and you should have no problem having them demonstrate a feature. Did you not have them physically show you a feature they told you the vehicle has? jkeaton
Mbookey20
Well that’s the first issue. It’s my wife’s car and she’s the only one who test drive it before buying it. She didn’t notice there wasn’t actually a backup camera until after the car was purchased and off the lot. I can say with 100% certainty it does not have a backup camera. The dealership says it “should” have a camera, but they’re not responsible blah blah blah. The parts department said according to the VIN number, it has a camera equipped, so they can’t order a part for it, etc. Neither have been particularly helpful. I get that at a majority of this is on us, but it’s not like we’re asking them to give us the camera and installation for free. We just need to know if it’s possible to even get a backup camera and what all that will entail.
OhareFred
If the vin says it has a camera, how the hell can the parts department say can’t order one? That is by far the stupidest thing I ever heard! I would go sit with the dealer GM, have him look up the vin and explain why they misled your wife by telling her it had a camera, the vin shows a camera, but apparently someone removed the camera at the dealership. They CERTAINLY CAN be ordered! What happens if a car with one installed breaks? Can’t be repaired? Put your foot down and demand what’s supposed to be on the car.... Dodge Cares, you out there? jkeaton and Summer Solstice

Mbookey20
Thanks for all the input! Yeah I think that needs to be the next step. Hopefully they can help get some resolution to this whole ordeal! Does anyone know if the Mopar backup camera for the Dodge Journey is not compatible with the 2018 model? It struck me as odd when I reached out to Mopar directly with my vin and what I was looking for they came back with “There is no plug and play option available at this time. Please try again at a later date.” Does that make any sense? I figured worst case I could just order than camera myself and get the dealership or someone else to install it, but even that’s proving harder than expected. Thanks! 2late4u
with my 2011 they said the same thing it took about 1 yr before it started saying it would fit hell they all use the same parts
Mbookey20
Yeah that was my thought too. It doesn't seem like they've really changed anything substantially in almost the last 10 years. So new twist here. I went to another Dodge dealership who looked up my car VIN and told me that it did NOT come equipped with a backup camera (not sure why the other dealership seemed to think that it did. I even called them again to verify before going to the other dealership). They also said that since my Dodge Journey is a 2018, it literally cannot be equipped with an OEM backup camera unless it was factory ordered to include one. Both Mopar and Dodge's direct customer service department confirmed that I have no options for an OEM integrated backup camera at this point. Dodge's customer service wasn't exactly sure why that is the case, but said this appears to have something to do with the "modules" in the 8.4 display in the 2018 Journey not being able to accept the OEM backup camera provided by Mopar that fits the 2011-2017 models. Do you think I'm at a standstill here until possibly a new Mopar camera is released that would fit the 2018 model, or does this just sound like the typical speel they'll give until they add the 2018 Journey to the compatibility list for the current 2011-2017 camera? This whole situation is just totally mind blowing OhareFred
larryl
Are they offering you some sort of refund? it does seem very strange that you have a one off Journey
OhareFred
I was under the impression backup cameras were required as of MY 2018 by NHTSA or DOT or one of those government type agencies. No? 2late4u

No? All new cars must include a backup camera by May 2018. That's the latest from the federal government's National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). 2late4u and OhareFred 1
Mbookey20
Regarding backup cameras being required, the individual I spoke to in the parts/service department of the Dodge dealership said either that's not being enforced or its not required to be implemented until the 2020 model. Not sure if that's Dodge specific or even accurate, but that was his understanding of the requirement. And no refund or resolution is being offered by the dealership we purchased from. It seems they could really care less once you take the car off the lot.
