Wondering if stepping down to the 2.4 (I believe this was the smaller engine equipped on the journey) is a straight swap, or relatively simple. Or if another engine can be swapped with little trouble. Seems a 3.5 from a Sebring or avenger is hard to come by. Plenty of 3.6s out there, but I've heard a new PCM is needed and possibly more.
