detroitgrip
Is my ac clutchless? Pulley always spins even when ac is off. AC works great. 48°. Never had any maintenance done to it. 2009 journey 2.4L Thanks!
jkeaton
The ac compressor will run by itself even with the ac system turned off to maintain humidity levels inside the cabin. 2late4u and detroitgrip
Hankster
Yes on the 2.4L its cluchless. It starts and stops by changing the pump displacement inside the compressor. Hank detroitgrip
John/Horace
I think in the defrost setting it will cycle a/c to help lower humidity; but only to a certain lower temperature. To protect compressor I don’t believe it functions at a few degrees below zero or freezing point. The cycling also helps keep the compressor seals lubricated so they don’t dry out and leak. John/Horace
There are variable displacement compressors that still have a clutch. Older units. https://www.bobistheoilguy.com/forums/threads/traditional-clutch-type-a-c-compressor-vs-variable.292066/#post-4800917 detroitgrip
