possom813
The journey just went to the dealership for an oil change. It has just under 20k on it and bone stock. My wife called and said the service tech said the air filter needed replaced. I told her to decline the 50 dollar air filter and I'd change it at home. She then called back and put the tech sales guy on the phone and he said there was oil on the filter and they wanted to check it out since it's under warranty. They called back and he said his lead tech checked it out and said it was nothing, probably the oil being poured in too fast. Huh? He explained that the oil could be poured on too fast and stayed on top and got sucked into the air filter on start up. Makes zero sense to me, but its5been a long time since high school auto shop My brain said pcv issue, but they said it was fine and the oil on the filter was nothing to be concerned about and that we should just avoid shady oil change shops. This thing has only had oil chanfes at this dealership So, any ideas? Do I need to take it to a different dealership to get it checked out? Warranty is good until 36k
OhareFred
I have the 2.4 in my Jeep Cherokee and from forums there the oil on the air filter seems to be a common issue. I haven’t seen it on mine, it only have 14K miles. Keep an eye on your oil level, some 2.4’s use oil like drinking water (that’s a entire other thread) but other then that, it’s considered normal....gotta love FCA... 5rebel9
Nothing new to this "occurrence", I've seen this with many sized and make motors since the 60's! Yes a small amount on the corner of the AF where the PCV equalizing air hose is located on the housing assembly IS normal. And is from long term oil fume collection down that tube during cool down at shut off of the motor. NOW if the whole air filter is getting soaked with oil, YES Houston ...we have a problem ! And I've seen that too in the past with some engines. jkeaton
5rebel9
Could not find an edit icon to further respond to the OP's situation. The top of the cyl. head valvetrain/ fill area is rather shallow on the 2.4 motor., but I'd rather think that pouring oil too fast would spill out thru the fill port.. A pic of said air filter and if this was clean or dirty oil would give better "clues" as to what did happen.
possom813
And a pic. I wasn't at the dealership with the wife. This is what the hubbub was about.
possom813
Had about 3600 miles on the oil.
5rebel9
With the low oil weight used in these motors today that is pretty common to see, and I wouldn't be worried about any engine problem from that. Yes you can change the filter, but also check for a small filter inside the air box where the equalization hose is. that needs replacement also from time to time. They used to be foam and later years went to a paper filter. On these really new cars today, they may have eliminated it altogether to save money. Enjoy your DJ!
