Mark R. Monaco
Rather than resurrecting one of the older threads, I figured I would start a new one. I've had my Journey for about three years (2nd owner), in which the radio unit was replaced within the first month through CarMax (the navigation wasn't working at the time). Since then, the system has been running fine. However, I just noticed today that the navigation screen is completely black/blank. Going into the dealer mode doesn't seem to provide any info either. - I tried any of the methods I could find to either get into the engineering menu or preform a soft reboot, but neither were successful (meaning I couldn't get into the menu or even do the reset). I would like to try to get this fixed on my own since my warranty deductible is relatively high. -Thanks in advance.
OhareFred
Have you tried the old disconnect the battery for 45 mins? Seems to work on a lot of DJ electrical issues.... NavalLacrosse

Not 31minutes, nor 29 minutes unless thou shall immediately continue onto 30 minutes. In all seriousness, disconnect the negative terminal under the hood by the driver's strut. It's a 15mm bolt. let it sit 30 to 40 minutes. Then plug it back in. If the screen works again, but then a week later acts up, then maybe you're looking at a new battery or at WORST a rebuilt alternator in the next few months. Additional issues that may arise soon are the dash lights flicker, the low-fob-battery warning, and the comical yet annoying wiper blade going, the outside temp reading -40, among many things. These are just the dodge's friendly way of saying the battery might be going bad. Good luck! Mark R. Monaco
The battery was already replaced in August. - For my particular model/year, it is located in the front bumper below the headlight housing. I know that there is a positive terminal under the hood, but I haven't seen one for the negative. Does that still apply to my model/year? Mark R. Monaco
Nevermind. I should have looked this up before I opened my mouth (lol)... I just pulled this pic from a YouTube video.

Thankfully, it's not a critical function and the Journey would still be drivable without it. - It's just an annoyance more than anything else. Edited September 29, 2020 by Mark R. I just pulled the negative (once I went to the store and picked up a 15mm socket) and will definitely wait at least 40min before reconnecting. I should have mentioned earlier (before you replied) that I did trick the radio into reboot by going into dealer mode and hitting "restore user settings". It basically errored-out and then prompted for a reboot. Unfortunately, once it came back up, all GPS functions seemed to stop working, including the auto clock set and the compass (which just displays "--" now). Nav was still showing a black screen as well... So, hopefully, me pulling the negative will fix all of that. Edited September 29, 2020 by Mark R. Mark R. Monaco
Ok, just reconnected the negative and it made no improvement in any of the issues that I mentioned above (black screen for nav, no compass, and no clock auto set). Reflashing UConnect "16/21/D7" didn't help either... Edited September 29, 2020 by Mark R. Monaco
Mark R. Monaco
Any attempts to either flash the latest Garmin update (on the UConnect website) or to downgrade to CTP13 via recovery (under the Dealer menu) results in "Error on Reflashing. Errorcode: 0x 31A0. Please touch screen."
NavalLacrosse
oof I'm stumped. I'm no expert on the Navi system, so my tried and true method of un-plugging the battery just t didn't work. Did you try the reflash to the latest CTP, not a rollback? There was a thread like two days ago talking about it by someone else where someone was passing around a ... how do we say, less than legit, copy of the reflasher file. I really think you might just have to take the ol boy back to the dealer (Car Rite) and complain that it was 'like this from day one' Edited September 30, 2020 by NavalLacrosse
Mark R. Monaco
The problem is that original dealer where I bought the car replaced the head unit when I bought the car. So, they know it was working. As for the other dealer where I had the battery replaced, they were performing all of my open recalls and doing a full inspection. So, they know it was working as well. So, I'm SOL. I'll continue to try to flash Garmin updates, but I'm sure I'm running into the whole flash drive pickiness problem that I've seen on this and other Dodge forums (considering I've tried three different flash drive brands/models). Mark R. Monaco
I forgot to mention that the first thing I tried (when flashing Garmin updates) was the latest available on the UConnect website. That also ran into the same "0x31A0" error code.
Vasconia
Any solution to this problem? I guess that the issue comes after doing a downgrade from CTP17 to CTP13, I think that it's a big jump from the latest to the CTP13 firmware... The Garmin Loading screen flashes every 30 seconds and there's no information at the Dealers Mode/Navigation screen... Any ideas?
Mark R. Monaco
No solutions on my end, but I should say that my problem came completely on its own. No firmware downgrades were done prior. I'm basically in a position where my compass, navigation, and auto clock set no longer work.
bramfrank
Looks to me like the GPS board has bit the biscuit. There is a service that will 'fix' your unit. I don't recall what their rate was. Search for it.
JAR414
Your other “less costly” alternative might be to check salvage yards for an RB5 unit from a dead car. That gives you a chance, because I think your GPS unit died. I did that (buy a salvaged unit), and got it back to life.
