My dodge journey stalls out in Drive and dies

I have a 2009 Dodge journey SXT 3.5 l v6.

For quite some time now both me my husband and my father have been racking our brains on what is going on with my car.

It goes into reverse, neutral, Park, first through six but when I put it and drive it stalls out and dies. it used to only stall out and die when I came to a stop sign or stop light. recently it can't make it out of my driveway without stalling and dying.

We replaced the EGR valve, the entire gas foot pedal (which I know has a sensor in it). But it still does the same thing. when we replaced the foot pedal it helped for a little while but then proceeded to get worse.

my husband seems to think that it might be a fuel issue but we have no clue what it might be.

if you've had this same issue and we're able to fix it please help me out. it's my family vehicle and I desperately need it to be on the road again.

Thanks!

John, my husband has put his code reader on it but it's throwing a code for a cat. We've looked at them banged on them a bit and made sure everything checked out. Just doesn't seem like the "symptoms" indicate that's it's either of the cats. P.s. the cats seemed fine when we looked at them. No rattling or low air coming though exhaust. Just didn't seem to add up and I'd hate to spend $1600 for 2 cats for it to not work in the end ?

It would be very help[ful for members to try and assist you if the actual code number were posted. There are diagnostic steps to be taken for any code that appears to pinpoint the actual fault of what has set that code. If members don't know what that code or codes are, then any offerings will be nothing more than guessing.

Also, an 09 with how many miles and what maint.(like spark plugs) has been done beyond the posted EGR valve. Yes the EGR is a rather finicky system on all FCA vehicles with the 3.5 motor, and a hanging open EGR can cause stalling out at idle when in gear.

What exactly does pounding on the cats supposed to do?  If the code is for the cats, the cat are bad. Looking at them and pounding on them tells you nothing.  Get the EXACT code so we can help....

had a friend yrs ago and he said every once in a while his caravan wouldn't start and he would use a hammer and bang on his cat to loosen it up and then his van would start, of course this is only worked for a bit till they clog up completely

I will get the codes from my husband when he gets home he has the code reader.

Years ago?...whole diff technology now. Cats only "plug up" from 2 main causes. Overly rich running engine(poor mileage and operation and usually CEL) or excessive oil consumption(burns oil, not leaking out).

My point of "banging" is to hear rattling or anything inside it. Sorry but I don't have $1600 laying around for 2 new cats just for it to might work. I just want to get more input before I dump alot of $$ into it.

And my point of posting was lets find out WHY you feel the cats MAY be plugging up and fix that cause, BEFORE having to shell out that kind of money for parts that will go bad again if the cause is not found and fixed.

Busting loose the catalyst substrate in the converters by "banging on them" will plug the exhaust piping and cause even more backpressure of exhaust gases back into the engine , thus definitely making the vehicle want to stall.

A few dollars now for a shop diagnostic to firmly identify the problem can save you a considerable amount of time and money later. You can still fix it yourself, if you are so inclined, but you will likely spend more in trail and error.  Pay for the answer if not cure.  Sometimes it's much cheaper in the long run.
