Belcherd19 Posted July 13, 2021 Report Share Posted July 13, 2021 So I bought a 2012 Dodge Journey a few weeks ago from a guy and noticed it had a misfire from cylinder 6(unclear how long it had been getting drove that way, but it must have been a long time) well anyways there was carbon build up on the valves and I’m guessing where cylinder 6 wasn’t burning the fuel that was coming in it liquified the carbon and turned it into sludge and the valves were pushing the sludge into the combustion chamber fouling up the plugs. I cleaned the valves with carb cleaner wiped it all down good and put it back together. If so, then isn't it a great feeling to take care off and fix a problem that so many give up on and get rid of the vehicle! There can be many causes as to why it did such, leaky injector, bad spark plug or coil, oil fume thru intake build up ... the list can go on. Belcherd19 Posted July 14, 2021 Author Report Share Posted July 14, 2021 Yeah it fixed it for the most part, definetly not something I thought was regular Maintenance, still getting the misfire every now and then I think I may still need to give it one more cleaning or run a few tanks of premium through it. BUT once "squared away", good treatment and driving style should not see a return of the same problem. I trust with all that done you did put in fresh spark plugs. Has anyone ever seen this happen before because it’s a first for me You said carb cleaner, I hope you meant fuel injection compatible cleaner. Carb cleaner kinda harsh, injection seals don't like it. If it fouls again, some shops have a injection cleaning set up called Motovac or something similar. They unhook engine fuel line and run car on a concentrated cleaner for 10 mins. Works well. The vvt have sensors with screens in them. You might get cam codes from the carbon sludge. The cat could be a mess too. Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
Belcherd19 Posted July 14, 2021 Author Report Share Posted July 14, 2021 No I used gdi intake valve cleaner and finished with a can of gumout carb cleaner I just made sure that the valves were seated so nothing could get down inside and I used a little syringe to get all of the wet/broke down carbon/carb cleaner out and wiped with a dry paper towel. Still a lot of white smoke on startup after this procedure but once all of the solvent gets burned no smoke. But with proper maintenance this wouldn’t even have happened.
