2016 Dodge Journey bogs down while going uphill

Recommended Posts

I have a 2016 Dodge Journey that bogs down while going up overpasses and bridges. I recently had the camshaft position sensors changed. I dont have a problem with it bogging down when accelerating on flat roads, but as soon as it starts going up an incline, it seems to not be getting enough fuel. The dealership service center cant seem to figure out what the problem is since its not showing any codes. Any ideas?

The camshaft sensors were changed two weeks ago. Thats the only other maint my vehicle has had to have. We thought that might have been the reason that it was bogging down when going up overpasses and bridges, but it didnt fix the problem.

Its the 2.4 awd. Its got 59663 miles. I bought the car used from dealership 10 months ago and I drive it about 300 miles a month. I havent done any maint other than fluid change.

check with your "Dealer" to see that the spark plugs have been replaced, they are due, look at your owners maint schedule in the owners book.

Gosh 300 miles a month, we do that in a week. I'd suggest a can of Seafoam fuel system cleaner in the next fill up. Yes the 4 cyl. model is no powerhouse on large hills and such, will do OK on the level.

IF you still get engine light, please post the codes in the P _ _ _ _ format, so we get a better understanding what the computer is seeing that it does not like.

Thats the problem. The engine light came on for the camshaft position sensors, thats why I had them replaced. I am not getting an engine light when it bogs down really bad and the mechanic is saying its not throwing any codes for it.

And that is why I suggested the 2 things for you to do. These 2 items will not throw an engine light or codes, until they get REAL BAD. lack of power on hills is a first indication of things needing attention.

I see you reside in the "US Southern Plains area" could you please describe closer your area (for terrain purposes) of use? And do you drive with a number of passengers and "gear" in the vehicle?

My sister has a 2.4 engine model and says the hills (we have many large hills here near Buffalo, NY) drag down speed/power. And is envious of our V6 model after I took her for a ride in ours.

Come to think about it, there are a couple of different codes for various computer concerns relating to camshaft position sensors, some do NOT mean that replacing them will fix the problem. Would be best if your problem persists that you get those exact codes from your repair invoice or the dealers records and post them here. THAT WAY, there can be little room for guessing and incorrect suggestions.

Spark plugs are still recommended..... read your maint. guide in the owners book.

I live along the south texas coast. Pretty flat terrain. But we have lots of overpasses and bridges. Thats where Im having the issues. Going up the higher overpasses and bridges. The mechanic was finally able to experience the bog down himself so maybe he can find the issues.

so easy to check or replace the plugs on a 2.4..no mention if they have been changed or checked...start with the easiest and cheapest maintenance  first .also replace your air filter just to be on the safe side or at least check it..... could  be low fuel pressure being sent to the injectors as well

are you using your cruise control when you notice the bog down as you encounter the bridges as you mention ? and if so when you press on the gas pedal does the journey speed up or still continual to slow down?

sorry to her that the Dodge(?) Dealer has not been able to figure it out yet.

Actually I've been wondering about the transmission torque converter clutch solenoid not releasing the overdrive  and letting it downshift to keep power and momentum. Been seeing this quite often being posted here on this forum and others that use the same engine/transmission package. BUT a good dealer should be able to figure that out.

Good Luck and keep us posted.    :)

It’s hard when no codes come up. I have seen intake throttle control valve cause no code bogging before on other vehicles.

It’s a small stepper motor , not a cable set up any more. Usually a higher mileage issue. Not trying to encourage throwing parts at it.

Well, day three of it being at the Dealership service center and they still have no clue. Yes, plugs have been changed as well as air filters. This is really frustrating.

When you say they “have no clue”, are you saying they have acknowledged an issue and do not know what to do or they don’t see an issue? Have you taken a service advisor on a ride and demonstrated he issue to them or just dropping it off and telling them what you are experiencing?

The mechanic actually took it over one of our steeper bridges and had the car bog down really bad. He says because its not throwing a code, he has no idea whats wrong with it. This is a mechanic at the dealership...

Is this an ACTUAL dodge dealership? Is this also the dealer you bought it from? IF SO, I'd suggest locating another DODGE  dealership in your area.

There is only so much we as a forum can offer in help. My sympathies as to your situation.

Its an actual Dodge Dealership. Not the one I bought it from though.

Surprising that they can replicate the fault yet have "no clue" as to where to go with a fix for it. That seems to be a common failure of many auto techs that rely on the cars computer systems to show the fault for diagnostics rather than using the "tech's" BRAIN POWER training.

I appreciate your patience about the situation with them AND here on the forum. GOOD LUCK and keep us posted!    :)

Maybe try another shop. Or cheap end of parts guessing. Intake throttle body  can get dirty and cause bogging without a code, on occasion. Cleaning with intake spray cleaner will often make it slightly better, or cause problem to temporarily go away. Pointing you in the right direction, to change a not crazy expensive item. If spray has no effect, wait for bogging to get bad enough to set an actual code.
