Wilson111
Hi dodge owners I just picked up a 2011 Journey R/T and have found the rear window and side mirror heaters don't work. I pulled the fuse and checked it with a multimeter and it's good, when I push the rear window button I get 12v across the terminals. I took the rear hatch skin off and disconnected the passenger connection to the grid. I get 12v from the grid to the closet clean ground I could reach- the back seat belt bolt. Power off I have continuity from the pass side connector to the seat bolt. When it's plugged back in and i hit the rear window button I don't have any voltage across the grid. I haven't been back to work to get my big torx bits to remove the seat belt bolt to get into the terminals behind the pilar yet. I'm not sure what I'm missing or if I'm going in the right direction, any suggestions will be helpful! Thanks! 5rebel9
But did you check for broken wires in the rear hatch rubber "boot" from the body to the hatch? It's common for wires to break in there and most folks finding the breaks closer to the body side.
Wilson111
Thanks for the reply, I have read that its common to see broken wires in that rubber boot but im getting continuity from the passenger side wire (disconnected from the grid) to ground inside the car. If it was broken I wouldn't get anything. 2late4u
2late4u
your description is kind of confusing on what you have done but i would assume you are getting power to the rear heat strip on the hatch back window would mean to me that the actual heat strip must have a broken wire that is built into the heat strip,,, since both features work off the same switch activates both options the front mirrors should have the heat working even if the rear doesnt work... hmm i hope someone chimes in on this problem, please keep us informed for others that might have this happen to them after you get it fixed good luck
Wilson111
Found the issue behind the rear seat belt cover. The previous owners said it never worked from when they brought it 7 years ago. Rewired it and bypassed the plug now it works again
5rebel9
That would surely cause your "glitch". A little different than the normal cause as I posted before, but in the same "ballpark". Glad you got it fixed! John/Horace
Cool you found it. Rear seat belt cover means behind plastic cover on what side of car. Thanks for follow up.

Thanks for follow up. That would be the DRIVERS side cover back at the rear hatch. I had that all out when checking/fixing for rear hatch lights not working on ours and had the whole hatch harness out for broken wires inside the main body area just about where the "rubber boot" attaches. YES , a bit of disassembly to do but not hard to do AND it saved greatly on labor costs to "farm the work out"!
John/Horace
And plug is just for assembling car on the line. So heat shrink and soldering wires together after removing plug works. Just lots of labor and 0.49 in materials. My kind of fix. Those rear defroster strips must use lot of current to melt a bad connection. Edited November 9, 2021 by John/Horace
