2013 Journey Stalls at lilghts

Im starting this topic for my sons 2013 Journey, 3.6ltr., just under 160,000 km.  The vehicle has a problem with stalling when coming to a stop at a red light or a stop sign.  It is intermittent, but usually happens more often when cold.  Other than that, it runs just fine.  And it is showing no codes at all.

Im thinking along the lines of coil packs, or perhaps crank position sensors, but the lack of an engine code is confusing me.

Anyone else have this issue?

Thanks in advance for any help.

5rebel9, thanks for your reply!

No recent plug service, but I kind of ruled that out since it runs well otherwise, not rough or bumpy like the plugs are fouled.  But then again, Im unfamiliar with these engines, could it simply be plugs are worn?

Also, can these trannies be serviced at home, or are they sealed and need to go in to the dealer?

I'd start with getting normal maint back up to snuff... plugs/air filter PCV Valve while the upper intake is off for plugs. You'd have to do this if you do coils/coil boots anyway.

Yes the trans pan can be dropped and filter replaced as a diy. BUT the proper refill is a bit tricky as there is no dedicated dipstick on the trans, they just put a cap on instead. Many use a cleaned engine oil dipstick and others buy the approved mfg testing "stick" WITH measurement chart for proper refill. Many "how to" posts can be found here, and you tube is a big help also.

Stalling without a code can be CPS sensor sometimes. Shuts off too quick to log code. Get NTK or an oem one if you do it.

Plugs are due for change and can affect gas mileage and starting. Waiting for cylinder misfire which proves coil or plug is bad not great for catalytic converters. Make sure to use double platinum or iridium plugs. Intake manifold gasket change at same time is a good idea, not expensive.

No transmissions are really sealed.  It’s just marketing bs for sales purposes. There is always a way to change/add fluid and usually filter. The 6 speed has a filter but pan needs removing. Refill with exact amount of ATF+4 that was removed. Rear diff and front ptu are over due for 75w90 oil change as well, if awd model.

Mine would occasionally stall when stopping due to the torque converter not unlocking.  No codes.  Try stopping in neutral and see if that helps.

For fluid level use the cluster temp reading on 62TE transmission. Could make up own dipstick using random  wrecker eng oil stick and paint marks.

If you want to do a pan-drop and filter change, replacing the fluid with the factory-recommended fluid, here are the temperature vs levels:

Ive had my boy trying this the past few days, and sure enough, it doesnt stall when he pops it into neutral to stop.  Looks like Ill be looking into changing the solenoid as well.  Thanks for the help, and to everyone who replied, its much appreciated :)

Good to hear that using suggestions from members here have helped track down the probable cause of your Journey's concern. PLEASE also drop the lower pan and replace the filter also.    :)

Definitley!  If Im going to get that far into the tranny, it would be foolish not to drop the pan and replace the filter as well :)

Besides fluid pan filter and solenoid,  I would consider changing neutral safety switch while you are in there. Wear item.

Not expensive, around $40 oem on Rockauto.

Thanks again!  You guys have been most helpful to a new guy here :)
