Repeated P0868 error

This first came on my Dash a year 1-1/2 ago. On my code reader it comes up as "transmission fluid level low". That started the nightmare of trying to find somebody who could address it. All the mechanics in this fairly big city advertise that  they do transmission, but when you ask them they don't.

 

Finally found a specialist who took a look at it and said they could not find anything wrong. Cleared the code. Like clockwork, every 6 months it comes back on. 

 

Assuming it's a hiccup, we've just cleared it every 6 months. That's a couple of times now. Do I really need to take it back to the transmission specialist? Is this a common problem on the Journey that check engine/codes pop up for no good reason?

Have never heard of this problem,,, I am assuming you have the 3.6 eng with the 6 sd trans? what mileage on the journey? have you had the trans fluids changed out, as it is due around 100 K ? and also i have to ask did they/you check the fluid level.?

Yes, 3.6 ...6 cyl

I could find no way to check the transmission fluid myself and from research I did online it said that it's not accessible (?)... And something along the lines that it's nowadays a closed system and  should not need to be accessed (?)

 

It's about a year and a half since I first had the problem and took it into the specialist and they looked it over. I assume they checked the fluid, but I don't remember details now

It is NOT a totally sealed trans! There is a tube to check and fill the trans., just not a dipstick it has a twist off cap instead. Why not look at the MANY youtube videos that are available on how to check trans oil for the 62te trans that yours and ALL 3.6 engine equipped FCA cars have.

Checking fluid level {and properly done} is the FIRST step in diagnosing your concern.

he can also use his oil dipstick that he can mark with a file to see how much fluid he has in the trans. check out youtube videos on how to correctly mark the oil dipstick as well......also hard to believe the 9yr old journey only has 28 k on it,

Thanks for your insights, it's good to hear from a person who has had real time experience with it, rather than online info.

 

I have to wonder why all the mechanics I phoned didn't offer to do that even though they seemed hesitant of digging further (hence my having to go to a specialist). When the light came on the last time I took it into my local mechanic to use his scanner on it (in case mine was not working right), and again they didn't offer that as a possibility but maybe they were toon  tunnel vision wondering about the transmission  fluid *pressure*
