phantom67
HI all, I was starting my Friday afternoon after work on my way for a road trip about 280 Kms from home. I was driving for about half an hour at about 140 kph when i noticed my temperature gauge start to climb rapidly. I slowed it right down and quickly turned the defrost on to high to try and relieve some of the heat from the engine, but the temperature kept going up. Before I could pull over to a safe spot on the highway, the needle was at max. All the coolant boiled out leaving me stranded for 5 hours. My 2010 Journey R/T has less than 10,000 Kms on it. When I took it into the dealer they told me it was a stuck closed Thermostat, hard to believe. Just wondering if anyone else out there has had any overheating problems or was this just a case of bad luck!
warbird24
Bad thermostats happen more than you think. It is such simple technology that is normally quite stable and reliable. One thing you could do is buy a "FAILSAFE" thermostat instead of the stock replacement. When these fail they fail in the OPEN position. This is safe to me than when the normal ones fail and stay shut like your did. At least it is something to consider.
BUGS
If you frequently go on long travels it is wise to keep a spare thermostat handy (they do not cost much) and make sure you have a jug for water or spare antifreeze. If your temp rises. Pull over, let it cool down, drink your beers and use the empties to fill up the overflow. Every body wins.
