MajorPain
Hello all. New here. So a little background, I took my 2016 Journey to the garage yesterday to replace the rear coil springs. I was told after it was finished that it was a very difficult job where they had to remove the back interior to get at the upper bolts. Picked up the truck and drove it home, and on the drive I noticed the center upper rear hatch door cover was hanging downfrom the roof. I looked inside and everything looked fine so I snapped it back in place. This morning I went out to move the truck and it kept telling me the key FOB wasn't found. I had forgot it in the truck over night and we had cold winds last night likely hitting -20C. I grabbed my spare FOB and it didn't work either. Changed the batteries in both and still didn't recognize the FOBs, and pressing the buttons on the FOBs does nothing. Tested the batteries and they both were about 3.4-3.5V so batteries are fine. I then checked the buttons and found the interior lock buttons work but the exterior driver and passenger doors as well as the rear hatch door buttons don't work. I can use the FOB to press the start button and it does start. I checked the fuse under the hood and swapped it with another in case and no change. So now I'm not sure where to look next. I'm wondering if the mechanic may have done something when pull the interior apart and replacing it. I've opened the rear door plastic cover off the was originally dangling but I don't see anything that stands out that could be an issue. John/Horace
Its possible the mechanic disturbed something else when he removed all the plastic interior covers. Or it is also possible you coincidentally have one or more broken wires in the hatch wire loom flex section. I would go back to mechanic and see what they say about it. Hatch manual lock/unlock switch, power and ground feed to hatch lock mechanism, high 3rd rear brake light, hatch running tail lights, licensed plate lights, hatch lower mounted task light, etc all fed through hatch wiring. Some people actually cut holes in the interior plastic panels to avoid the huge job of removing half the rear interior panels for upper strut mount bolt access. Yea I guess if knowing the amount of work required to change the springs, cutting holes would have save a lot of time and finding snap in caps to close the hole might have made the job easier. I'll have to check the flex casing with the wires and see if anything looks worn. I did read the the FOB antennae could be up in the center roof area at the back door and I looked there already and everything seems ok. Guess I'll try the mechanic tomorrow. Issue with them is that they are very busy and you have to book weeks in advance.
MajorPain
On a side note and not sure if it's related, but I had a new trouble code come up since being at the garage B230C(13) which seems to relate to the rear wiper park relay. The rear wiper motor has been dead for about 2 yrs so I never worried about it. Bought a new one 2 yrs ago but never took the time to install it. John/Horace
You could try removing main power on battery for 10 mins on the off chance it resets something. When my rear hatch exterior lock button stopped working for a few months. The other outside switches on both front door handles still worked. When I lost the high 3rd brake light I finally pulled apart hatch flex harness and found several broken/damaged wires and fixed both problems. Solder heat shrink…and patience. The drivers door wire harness flex section is another bad spot on Journeys. So you could also have a bad wire there or maybe there is a bad fuse feeding stuff through both harnesses. Affecting front passive entry door locks. Need to do some trouble shooting.
MajorPain
Fixed. Turned out the new FOB batteries were duds. No FOB and all exterior buttons and handles for the locks don't work.
5rebel9
May all your cars' problems be as easy as a bad fob battery! Glad you found the problem and another fob battery fixed things.
