2015 Journey 62TE transmission slipping out of drive gears into neutral

Recommended Posts

Hi - I'm looking to see if other people had this same problem.  My Dad's DJ with 80,000 miles started having a transmission problem where he was driving in his residential subdivision and the 6 speed auto transmission would slip into neutral.  He would have to restart the vehicle to put it back into drive.  He didn't drive more than 1/2 mile and brought his car back home.  We plugged in the OBD2 and got these 4 codes:  P0733, P0841, P083B, P08846.  They seem to be all transmission fluid pressure switch / solenoid codes.  We checked his trans fluid (with the oil dip stick) and it had about 2 inches of fluid that did not look to be dirty.  It was clear/ bluish?  Even having 80,000 miles, he has not had a transmission fluid or filter replacement.  The engine at start up had a very LOUD noise at idle.  I did not drive it.

We towed it to the dealer and they told him the torque converter clutch gears are shot and he needs a whole new transmission which is over $6000.  I'm a little distrustful of the dealer and blown away that a transmission would fail at 80,000 miles.  Just looking for any advice or anything we could check ourselves.  We are thinking of getting a second opinion from a recommended trans shop.  From reading the P codes, I thought it was more an electrical issue, but hearing the possible grinding noise, maybe there is mechanical damage.  I also read that there was a recall on some 2015 DJ for the transmission pump but when I put his VIN in, his car wasn't affected.
