Tranny Fluid Drain

Has anyone done a transmission fluid change on the 4 speed auto?

Is there a drain/fill plug or does the pan need to come off?

I would like to put in RP Synthetic.

It is my understanding that it is a sealed trans. If it is a 2009, don't mess with it because it might void your lifetime warrenty.

It's a 2010 but by sealed, do you mean no pan either? No filter to replace?

I know that there are completely sealed transmissions out there, my Jetta had a sealed lifetime unit,

which was the most ridiculous this I have ever seen. The second the warranty ran out the transmission failed.

I hope the dodge 4 speed is not like that, unless dodge found a way to defy the laws of physics.

In Canada, we don't have to worry about voiding a lifetime warranty. It isn't offered here.

If i remember right, it is totally sealed. If there is a filter, we can't get to it. I thought I saw this in the manual. Take a look there to make sure.

Rotate tires.

Replace the engine air cleaner filter.

Replace the spark plugs (2.4L Engine).

Inspect the brake linings, and replace if necessary.

Replace the air conditioning filter (if equipped).

Change Power Transfer Case (PTU) fluid.

Change the automatic transmission fluid and external filter.

Anyone know the location of the external filter. Would be very cool if it's a spin on, like an oil filter.

I double checked my manual and it says there is a filter and the fluid can be changed, but i can't find how to do it anywhere. Every place I look says have the dealer do it. I'm sure someone out there knows. When you find out, let us know. Good luck.

I call the dealer and he said to get to the filters you have to take the trans pan off to change them. To change the fluid, you need a special tool to remove a special cap on top of the engine. Hope this helps...

Yeah... Looking at the manuals for the 2010 and 2011, both the 3.5 and 3.6L engines were paired with sealed transmissions as well. I find it odd the manual lists what kind of fluids to use, but then you go to the section on changing the fluid and it says dealer service only.

This concept was news to me, but looking around the net it appears to be a common thing in newer cars. Thinking about it, I am not sure I like the fact only the dealer can do it, but really these days I would rather they do it anyways. Thats why I have a new car and not a used fix-it-daily car.

I just wanted to let everyone know that if you want the two tools to change the transfer case fluid, you can go to Zoro.com and buy them.  It took me 3 hours of looking online to find what you need so I'm going to share them with everybody on all the transfer case fluid changing threads here:

 

1. 10mm Metric Torsion Bit 7/8" total length.  Part # Apex - SZ-7-10MM   and

2. 25 degree Angle Box End Ratchet (American Made).  Part # Proto - J1182T
