JosephLennemann
I have a 2009 Dodge Journey SXT and outside of the car you can hear what sounds like a tick/knock from the bottom of the engine. When you get to the top of the engine you really can't hear it that loud. When your in the car and taking off from complete 0 MPH you can hear the noise inside very lightly. It follows the RPM. Anyone have this problem or does anyone know what the problem is?
b1pig
does the tick change with the temperature of the engine? meaning is it louder when first started and quiet down a little or go almost completely away after the engine has been running a MINUTE or more? is the tick more noticable on one side of the engine? (for the v6) it "could" be an exhaust leak. its a ticking sound sure enough. my '07 wrangler had a cracked exhaust manifold. on a cold start the ticking was loud and annoying... but after a couple of minutes it dulled down a little. i put headers on it. Dodge tends to use the flat metal exhaust gaskets. theyre pretty durable, but that doesnt make a leak impossible. or a cracked manifold. I got it back from the dealer I bought it at (Preston Hood) and I noticed that the noise was gone when I got home. I just did an oil change and whenever I do an oil change I clean where the oil drips from the filter. I looked under the engine and my clearly unscrewed my oil filter which makes me think they put a heavy weight oil in my engine and kicked me out the door until my warranty expires in 200 miles. The mechanic stated that he could not find a tap/knock when it is loud enough to hear inside and outside of the car. I'm uploading a video to Youtube and will post the link to it. Link to the engine noise. Edited August 13, 2011 by JosephLennemann
debrd
Bought a used 2010 Journey 8 months ago from a local Dodge dealer. After the first oil change we noticed a tapping noise in the engine. Next oil change we asked about it & they said bring it back when they have time to look at it. When we did they said its normal. When the engine RPM increases, the tapping noise is faster too. We asked a non-dealer mechanic if this sounded normal; he said "No, it sounds like rocker arm noise". When we took it back to the dealer, they had i a couple days. The engine seemed quieter for about 1 day, then back to tapping. The dealer mechanic report says "Rocker arm assembly - Replace 3.5 - 4.0 liter engine - Both heads (B)". After looking at the engine compartment, there is no evidence of anything being worked on in the engine compartment. Today the tapping is even louder. We are due for an oil change now & wonder if we should take it in to the dealer for more BS.

redtomatoman
When I think of tapping from the engine, I always think of belts and pulleys; especially when the tapping increases with rpm. There could be a belt issue or one of the pump pulley bearing assemblies could be starting to fail. I would be sure that the dealer rules out a failing belt or bearing as a seized bearing will break your belt. My Journey is new and I have not looked at my engine too closely, but I am assuming that all the pump pulleys are run by one serpentine belt. Not sure though. Contacting Chrysler and opening a case before your warranty ends as Doug mentions would be a good idea as well. Good luck. Peace.
