Possible Future TSB - Occupant Safety Module

Recommended Posts

Well, Let me start by saying that I am new to this forum but my wife and I have been reading the posts for about a week. Two weeks ago we purchased a new V6 SXT Journey and we do really like the car/SUV! Unfortunately out of the past 2 weeks we have only had posession of it for 7 days. The day after we bought it the airbag light started coming on so back to the dealership it went. They started out by replacing the side curtain airbag but still kept getting error codes. There next stab at fixing the problem was replacing the "Occupant Safety Module" which controls airbags, seatbelt tensioners and all safety aspects or the car. The dealer ordered the part and also called the maufacturers "Star" line that puts the technician in touch with the Tier 1 technical resources for the product.

According to them their is an issue with the first manufacturing runs of the Journey's because of the type of connectors "Delphi manufactured" utilized on the OSM module. They have since changed to a new style of connector. Of course currently these new connectors have not made it to the regional parts warehouses so there is a delay getting them. This is supposed to finally resolve any airbag issues. Last weekend when we where "visiting" our Journey at the dealership we saw another 1 week old Journey being dropped off for an issue. We feel that it probably has the same issue as ours so that is what prompted the call to the manufacturer.

The only other problem that we have had is noisey lifter sounds from the engine for the 1st minute of a cold start. The dealer replaced lifters and guides on a couple of cylinders.

Problems are to be expected on when you purchase the 1st year of any product. I traded in a Dodge RAM 1500 (2005) for this Journey for my wife and hopefully after these few glitches it will be as reliable as the pickup was!!!!

I find your post interesting because my wife and I have found that the seat belts do not seem to tighten up all the time. You can freely pull them out without any lockup. It needs to go in for a radio change so I'm going to be calling the dealer about this issue. It is also a V6 but we have ha no loud noise at all on startup or any other squeaks rattles etc it the R/T.

our VIN ends in 192377

In many designs, it is normal for the seatbelts not to lock up during normal operation. The last Dodge I had was designed this way, and I find it to be a superior design. In this design, which I assume the Journey uses, the seatbelts should only lock during a crash or abrupt maneuver.

On the other hand, one of the most irritatating "features" of my 2003 Jetta is the ease with which the seatbelts lock up. If I get in the car, and don't consciously pull the belt out s-l-o-w-l-y while putting it on, it will catch, and I will have the release the tension a bit so I can continue pulling out the belt.

If you want to confirm that the belts will lock during a crash, you should be able to test them by executing a sudden stop while at the same time giving the belt a hard yank. (In a safe place of course). If you time it right, and jerk hard enough while stopping hard enough, the belt will lock up.

It is true that if you yank them hard enough they seem to lock up. When you lean slowly forward you could lean right into the dash without it locking so that is why I thought they might be having issues.

Thanks.

Hello I am Colwyns wife i can tell you our VIN Number ends in 168064. Sorry for the delay in reply. Due to various issues with the dealer service dept its been a while since we had our vehicle for a prolonged period but I don't recall any seat belt tension issues. Hope its nothing serious!

From Pages 41-48 of your owners manual:

Lap/Shoulder Belts

All seating positions in your vehicle are equipped with

lap/shoulder belts.

The belt webbing retractor is designed to lock during

very sudden stops or impacts. This feature allows the

shoulder part of the belt to move freely with you under

normal conditions. However, in a collision, the belt will

lock and reduce your risk of striking the inside of the

vehicle or being thrown out.

How to Engage the Automatic Locking Mode

1. Buckle the combination lap and shoulder belt.

2. Grasp the shoulder portion and pull downward until

the entire belt is extracted.

3. Allow the belt to retract. As the belt retracts, you will

here a clicking sound. This indicates the safety belt is

now in the Automatic Locking mode.

How to Disengage the Automatic Locking Mode

Unbuckle the combination lap and shoulder belt and

allow it to retract completely to disengage the Automatic

Locking mode and activate the vehicle sensitive (emergency)

locking mode
