BrandonPickett
Hi All, New to this board. I have a 2011 Dodge Journey with 4.3" uConnect. I want to put in a double DIN navigation/satalite radio/BT unit. Has anyone done this here? Can it be done? I cant seem to find a kit online for the car. Any insight would be greatly appreciated. Thanks
bigtsr
Google "Crutchfield Radio". When I had my Dodge Caliber fellows on the forumz used them almost exclusively putting double din gps/video systems in their cars. They have all the adapters and from what they said excellent help for installs.
bramfrank
Good luck swapping out the radio. How are you planning to control the air conditioning?
BrandonPickett
Good luck swapping out the radio. How are you planning to control the air conditioning? Right, so is it not possible then? I went to Crutchfield and there were no kits for this car. I have searched high and low and cant find anything. bigtsr
I guess possibly 2011 DJ model radio swaps haven't been anticipated or projected yet even by Crutchfield. I supposed that seeing the 4.3 uconnect system has hard keys on dash for AC/Heat you would be limted to using those for control.
coolram62
You also have to take into account the radio mounts behind ,and to the lower section, the panel with the HVAC/Radio/Misc controls there would have to be complete package to do an aftermarket swap. And you have to wonder how the BCM will react to the factory radio removal. This is a much more involved swap than the '88-94 Chevy C/K platform was and that in itself took the aftermaret a bit to get a handle on it. I've thought about upgrading my '11's radio to an 8.4 but there are factors even with this. Will a dealership be willing to run STARTECH to register the new package to the car's VIN and how will Siruis handle the new ESN.
Armendegga
The other thing to keep in mind is that the screen is just that - a screen. the actual stereo unit is actually behind the HVAC controls (at least on the 8.4N). I am not sure if there is adequate room to install a stereo where the current touchscreen is.
BrandonPickett
okay, I will hold off for now as it dosent look like there is an easy solution. I'm sure this is mentioned elsewhere but would you know the approximate price to chage to teh 8.4 screen through the dealership?
Armendegga
I've seen a couple links for aftermarket sources that were around $2000 for the 8.4n... I would expect the price from the dealer to be at least that much as well (if they can even source it... There's the shortage of them right now). That is a very good point about the parts shortage and the price sounds about right. You might check salvage yards for either a '11-'12 Journey,Charger,or 300 for the complete system. It's not as much of a long shot as you might think. Go to http://www.car-parts.com to start your search. But I would check with your dealer ,actually more than one, to make sure they can integrate the system with STARSCAN before you do the swap. Some aren't willing to do this and there are some that may not know how. You will also have to order the HVAC panel with the SD slot (unless the donor car is a Journey with the same color panel as yours). And as mentioned contact Sirius to check how they will handle the ESN change if you have the 1 year free subscription.
BrandonPickett
So I went to Mopar and found they have a rear-view mirror with built in back up camera screen and bluetooth... great!! Just what I am looking for. Of course I couldnt find a price for this on thier site. Anyone familiar with this device? Any reports on its functionality? mrlux
Sorry to hear you are having this issue with wanting the 8.4 and can't get it. I was lucky to order my Lux when I did. I was a bit worried but it came in with the 8.4 and the new front and back fascia.
NormsHGW
I guess I made a mistake, from reading these posts (maybe I misread them) you can't change the radio installed in the Journey, or maybe it's just the hi-end ones with all the fancy doo-dads your talking about. I have a 2010 Journey but I didn't really care for the AVS (u-connect) system the had so I just got the basic 6 disc/am-fm radio with no satellite radio even, I forget the model number but you know the one. I wanted to put my own after-market one in, so I did. I did a lot of checking and finally setteled on the Pioneer AVH-3200DVD but the 4200 would work too. I didn't get the bluetooth model because I don't use a cell phone. I installed it with little effort, the biggest problem was the heavy gauge support bracket in the back, the one the OEM radio fit in to, I had to spread it out so the 3200 would fit through it, not a big deal though. I checked a lot of places and 99.8% said this a/v system would not fit the Journey but I checked the dimensions left, right, up, down, back etc etc... and all the numbers said it would fit, I guess no one thought to modify the bracket I mentioned. I also bought the GPS add-on for the 3200 and in the future I'll buy the backup camera too but I don't drive enough to warrant buying the satellite add-on and paying their user fees. I put it all in and had it running in about 3 hours but keep in mind, I took pictures of everything before I started and made a plan on how I would do it before I even started, spreading the heavy support brace for the 3200 to fit through was the hardest part but it all fits like a glove now and works fantastic. I also added the DVD by-pass for this unit, for those that don't know what that is, look it up. I was going to have someone install it for me but they came up with installation fees that would make Bill Gates flinch so that's why I did it myself, and I'm glad I did, in fact, I would not recommend you letting someone else do it or even trying it yourself unless you know 100% you (or whoever) can tackle it, but, if you can, and if you have the basic radio like I did, it sure is worth it. The first time I took it back to the dealer for an oil change they made the comment about how much nicer this was, in every way, to the original radio I had. So there you have it, the Pioneer AVH-P3200DVD/BT (or AVH-P4200DVD/BT) will fit, the new model is the 3300 & 4300 but it looks to be the same dimensions. I'll see if I can post a couple pictures below so you can see the fit. Hope that helps those looking for a change in radios..... This is the radio I installed alone and in place: This was before I installed the 3200: Edited December 21, 2011 by NormsHGW nerner
bramfrank
Norm The 2011 and 2012 use a very different system which controls, among other things the air conditioning and it is inextricably tied in to the on board network. Previous years used more conventional modular stereo systems.
Armendegga
@bramfrank, I believe you mean the 2010 is different from 2011+. The 2011 and 2012 use the same setup.
bramfrank
That is what it says. 2011 & 2012 control the aircon (among other things) and previous years used a more conventional arrangement.
NormsHGW
Thanks for the info on that. I bought mine new so it will be awhile before I get another new vehicle but the info may help those with the 2010 (and 2009?) Journey... I think the way they keep changing things in these new cars, my next one may be a 1956 Dodge, at least I still remember how to work on those, and I still have the tools to do it LOL.... ChrisPollard
Something like these? http://www.pickuptrucks.com/html/history/segment7.html Yeah, I'm with ya. Never had trouble wrenching on my 63 Falcon, 74 Gran Torino, or 84 F150. 87 Crown Vic wagon wasn't too bad ... but that fuel injection stuff just isn't simple to work on like a carb. Yeah, I did own a lot of Fords in the past ... although I'd never have called myself a Ford guy. A Falcon guy perhaps. I still miss that little car. 170 inline 6 and three on the tree baby!! WOOOOOO!! Got my first speeding ticket in that car.
House
My dealer told me it was impossible to swap out the 8.4 in the Journey 2012 because I wanted to add a Backup Camera + Navigation to the Car - I saw you could add it through a module i found through google called the UCI-11C Landing Page - http://www.interfacingthefuture.com/2011/08/oem-vehicle-integration.html Anyone try it out yet ? Will be calling them later on today -
