Oil Capacity

I had my first oil change done yesterday on my 2011 Dodge Journey. My bill shows a charge for 6.5 liters of oil whereas the owners manual for the 3.6 liter engine shows a capacity with filter of 5.2 liters. I immediately checked the dip stick and the level is fine and where it should be.

Phoned the Chrysler dealer for an explanation and according to them Dodge documents show a higher oil capacity than 5.2 liters.

Converting 5.5 US quarts( per owners manual) into US gallons and then from US gallons into liters comes to 5.2 liters per the owners manual.

Converting 5.5 US Quarts into US gallons but then, incorrectly, using that as an Imperial gallon and converting into liters gives 6.3 liters which is very close to what I was charged for.

Have any other Canadian owners run into this situation on their bills? Could be an inadvertent mistake by my dealer but that mistake adds another $5 to the bill.

Could be because your engine is still in break-in period and may be burning more oil until it's broken in....Last month, I did my oil change and usually bring my own oil, brought 6 liters (4.4 Litre and two 1 Litre) to be safe and there was some left from one of the 1 litre bottles, so 6L is pretty precise.

What do they charge you for service when you bring your own oil ?

Don't forget about this....

Dodge announces free maintenance program for 2011 Journey LUX.

Dodge has just announced a free maintenance program for the highline versions of their crossover.

This program, which carries a listed retail value of $1,100, will come as a standard feature on 2011 Durango Citadel and 2011 Journey Lux – the current “highline” of those models. The No-Cost Maintenance Plus progam offers 3 years of 36,000 miles of basic maintenance at no cost to the customer. This includes service items like oil/filter changes every 3 months or 3,000 miles and the recommended 6,000 mile service (tire rotation, belt and fluid inspection, etc). The No-Cost Maintenance Plus plan also comes with $35/day allowances for rental cars should your 2011 Durango or Journey be in the shop overnight, $100 allowances for ‘sign and go’ towing or emergency roadside assistance and even $1,000 for trip interruption coverage in case you are on vacation and your new Dodge runs into an issue.

This program has been added to help give added peace of mind to the owners of the 2011 Durango Citadel and Journey Lux, as well as reducing the cost of ownership. These two trimlines are aimed at the luxury end of the segment and maintenance programs like this have become common for the higher end models so now new Dodge owners can enjoy the same luxurious amenities, style and hassle free ownership more commonly expected of far more expensive vehicles.

Ralph Gilles, President and CEO of the Dodge brand had this to say about their new No-Cost Maintenance Plus plan:

“The new Dodge Durango Citadel and Journey Lux models are loaded with features and content typically found on competitor vehicles priced tens of thousands of dollars more. This new no-cost maintenance plus plan gives our loyal customers, as well as customers who are discovering the Dodge brand for the first time, unparalleled peace of mind."

The full details for the new Mopar No-Cost Maintenance Plus plan:

-Benefits of 3 years or 36,000 miles

-$0 deductible

-Oil, oil filter changes and lubrication (3-month/3,000-mile service intervals)

-Scheduled and recommended maintenance (6,000-mile intervals)

-$35/day car rental allowance (car rental allowance for any overnight dealership mechanical repair, 5-day maximum per occurrence)

-$35/first day rental (car rental allowance or taxi service for any dealership mechanical repair or maintenance service [includes bodywork])

-$100 “Sign-and-go” towing and roadside assistance - Benefits include towing, flat tire change (with existing good spare) battery jump, out-of-gas fuel delivery (maximum 2 gallons), and lockout service (i.e. keys locked in vehicle or frozen lock), as much as $100 per occurrence

Yeah, sadly, there are a lot of things they can get in the states we can't get here. Saw a sign coming home this weekend ... I think it was in Wisconsin ... for new Fords - 20 year, 200,000 mile warranty. Now, obviously the 20 years is BS, unless you never drive the thing, but still ... 200,000 miles? Wonder what kind of fine print is in THAT contract?

That's awesome for Americans... Unfortunately, for the majority of us Canadian's that was never an option... We don't even have the LUX up here... We have the R/T which is the same time as the US LUX, but no free maintenance.

Doesn't do a whole lot of good for Americans at this point either since the Lux has been discontinued. It doesn't look like the free maintenance plan is being offered on any trim level for 2012.

It's probably similar to the lifetime powertrain warranty that Chrysler was doing a while back. It must have been costing them more in repairs than it was making them in additional sales, because they dropped it in 2010.

Haven't paid for an oil change since 1990, I'm on my 6th vehicle from them. My dealership gives me free oil changes every 5000 kms. or 3 months which ever comes first.

What do they charge you for service when you bring your own oil ?

A Chrysler dealership just opened up in my area and had a $9.99 special for oil change, so I have not paid full price yet bringing in my own oil. I suggest to just call them up and ask how much less it is when you bring in your own oil.

I personally wouldn't put in more oil than what is listed in the manual. If it says 5.5 qts, put in 5.5 and no more. Check the oil level after it has been sitting overnight. I had this same issue with my '03 Intrepid. The manual called for 5 qts and it always read low if you had been running the engine, or just changed the oil and went to check it. After letting it sit overnight, the level would read properly. Putting too much oil in the crankcase is not good for the gaskets and seals, and it might rob you of power and economy.
