jctin
Got my factory journey only 2 weeks ago and decided to go back to the dealer to instal the OEM fog lamps. The tech struggled to have it installed all day and finally got the call it is ready around 5:30 PM but since Chrysler Canada already closed, he could not get the code to program to make it to work???? Decided to leave it overnight so that it can be programmed this morning. Any idea what's that code for?????
bigtsr
In these computer controlled cars the codes refer to what are known as"sales codes". They turn on the accessories that are controlled from TIPM (power distribution computer/fuse box) so if the car didin't come with fogs the TIPM is reprogrammed to supply power to them. Ain't computers wonderful!!!!!!!
bramfrank
Essentially, every vehicle is capable of implementing almost any of the features that one might get in a 'higher' model - there are 'semaphores' in the software that determine whether your air conditioning is servo-based or temperature controlled. There are codes to control access for fog lights, daytime running lights, cruise control, remote starter, remote window roll down and so much more. As you saw, however just installing fog lights doesn;t do the entire job in this case - the light switch needed to be replaced as well because it doesn't have the switch or software to control the fog lights. The samer applies to features like express down and express up window controls. All it takes is the ability to log in to the BCM and set (or reset) the appropriate codes. And that's where they can make a killing.
BEEF
Do you think getting a used fog light system off of a wrecked journey would require the codes also?
webslave
If your car didn't come with them as part of a package or ordered option, then, yes you would need the codes... Your car won't know it has them until the appropriate code is provided to the onboard computer (part of the VIN as stored in the BCM) which will then allow power to them and have them turn off when the highbeams are on or come automatically with the headlights. You could add them, power straight from the battery (with a fuse in the line) and then rig a seperate switch (preferably through a relay) and then run them off that seperate switch, but, you won't have the "as stock" integration provided by the car's CANBus systems. That's the way we did it (ancient old school) back in the "pre computerized" days of automobiles...
