Scratched Sunroof?

Recommended Posts

I noticed the other day that my sunroof has several long scratches on the outside of the glass. For the life of me, I couldn't figure out what would be causing these scratches. This morning, I hit the open button and then stood on the door sill so that I could watch the sunroof open from the outside. Sure enough, as the sunroof was opening, I could hear a horrible scatching sound. It appears that there is almost zero clearance between the glass and the underside of the roof pocket that the glass slides into when opening. If the glass is not completely clean, it will scratch as it is opened. My car isn't super dirtly, but there is a thin layer of polin all over it. That's apparently enough to scratch the glass when the sunroof opens.

Has anyone else experienced this? Is the expectation that you have to wash your car every time you want to open the sunroof?

When you bring it in that's the way you describe it - not enough clearance, resulting in the glass being gouged sometimes (as in there seems to be some play in the mechanism). You expect them to replace the glass and adjust (or replace, as appropriate) the mechanism.

Don;t get into the 'glass needs to be clean' stuff -= it only gives them a possible reason to deny your claim.

Ok I searched the forum but didn't find it so I'll ask here. My mom has a 2009 Journey and her sunroof is leaking. She bought it used in April. Unfortunately it's past factory warrenty but we have a great dealer that we deal with.I'm just wondering what she could be looking at. Thanks in advance for any help.

Assuming no body damage has been done to the vehicle, I would think it might just be the rubber around the sunroof might need replacement and/or a realignment.

These are just educated guesses as I am not a mechanic and do not work for Dodge or any other dealer. Good luck.
