redtomatoman
http://www.allpar.co...ntastar-problem Just happened to see this. Just wondering if anyone has had this problem or knows anything about it. I'll be coming up on 20 K miles in the near future. Peace. bamboo510
Old post I know, but I have 18K miles on my 2011 3.6L and I got the P0302 cylinder 2 misfire code. Brought it in to the dealer today and sounds like the cylinder head problem for earlier Pentastars. I haven't heard back from them about the leak down test yet but it sounds like a wide spread problem. The wrangler forum has a 4000+ post thread about it. http://www.wranglerforum.com/f33/update-on-ticking-pentastar-new-head-137608.html
redtomatoman
After that post, I didn't have the cylinder 2 problem but I did have the cam phaser problem. Right at about 20k. I hope I never have the cylinder problem obviously. What were the symptoms? I know with my cam phaser, I had no discernible symptoms. Only the code. After replacement the engine still runs great. Best of luck to you. Peace.
bamboo510
I noticed a slight drop in MPG, and I could feel the idle wasn't as smooth as it should be. I reset the code myself and the engine light didn't come back on for another 5-600 miles. Dealer tech said it's safe to drive but he wouldn't take it up to Tahoe, funny thing is I drove it to Tahoe and back the day before I took it in (~400 miles). I'm actually glad it happened now that there's a fix, dealer didn't ask any questions and hooked me up with a loaner quickly. From what I gather is they redesigned the left cylinder head for better coolant flow, and the tech told me that the part number has changed around 6 times. Hope we're good to go from now on! redtomatoman
Your situation sounds similar to mine. Almost no symptoms. I didn't even have a check engine light. Nothing that I could discern anyway. Amazing diagnostics in these cars, I suppose. Dealer picked up my cam phaser code at a TSB update visit. At least these problems don't simmer unnoticed until they boil over as an engine failure and leave us stranded. I hated the idea that my perfectly new engine compartment would have to be be opened, but I suppose its better than being stranded. My dealer gave me a loaner too, a Jeep patriot. Made me appreciate getting my Journey back. Keep us updated. Maybe request to see the old cylinder head and ask the tech to show you where it failed if its visible. I did that with my cam phasers but when I looked at them the service manager said there was no visible failure. Maybe a bearing or something internal. Anyway it may be enlightening. Peace.
