Check engin

My check engine light came on a few days ago. I had just gotten it inspected an oil changed. I have checked all fluids, gas cap, and have disconnected the battery to try and clear it. Nothing has helped. I am wondering how long I should let it go like this. I am not feeling inclined to spend the money at the local dodge dealership just to hook it up to a scan tool. They usualy charge me over $100 to do so... I have about 64,000 miles on the vehicle. Has anyone else had their light come on, and what was it for?

I use an Android app called Torque Pro which works with a Bluetooth OBD II adapter. The adapter which I got off eBay for about $30.00 plugs into the ECU slot under the dash. It provides the ability to read any and all codes the engine could throw. Luckily, I haven't had any codes thrown yet so I use it to monitor all other aspects of the engine. It has a dashboard on my Samsung GSIII and gives me everything from speed, rpm's, intake temp, 0-100km time plus over 100 other parameters. All this from the ECU - not GPS. This is an awesome app. There is a trial of the app but you must have the BT adapter. Sorry to get off topic but I know if my check engine light ever comes on, I can run a diagnostics right from my phone. If I can fix the issue myself- great. If not, I at least know the problem going into the dealership. Very much worth looking into. Cheers.
