eaglescanfly
2010 Dodge Journey SXT knocking in cylinders when vehicle is accelerating, idle at a certain speed and load on engine. I am getting a belt squeal more noticeable when next building. Here is a recording from engine compartment when problem is happening. (Mounted a camera and mic for this recording in engine compartment to record noise for those who can't hear normally) Loss of power, no response when trying to accelerate, drone noise in front and back of passenger side of vehicle http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5zXNx70jJlY
Doug D
Is the check engine light on? Oil level okay? I don't hear a true "knock" - I hear ticking. How many miles/Km? Do you have an extended warranty? I'd suggest having the dealer check into it.
eaglescanfly
I have tried the dealership and the dealership then went to chrysler techs themselves yet they say it's a characteristic to my vehicle. I have never heard so much cylinder knock on a vehicle especially when under powered and under load. Under load meaning idling in 6th gear and when slowing down and then resuming gradually the vehicle has a problem going it's like it has no power at all other than low rpm my vehicle. When this is happening my vehicle is at 1,000rpm to 1,100 rpm at 60 to 80 km's an hour. My vehicle once out of 6th gear wants to immediately get back into 6th when I am trying to speed up when in fact it should stay low until my vehicle gets to idle speed. It has Gold Plan warranty on it. 53,000km's. Listen closer to the last half of the youtube video. It's a knock not a tick.
redtomatoman
If it is truly a knock and the dealer has not diagnosed it correctly then, if you have the extended warranty, drive it like its stolen and make your dealer fix it. If not, find a new dealer. Best of luck to you. Peace.

srk23
My engine just started making this noise as well. Oil level is okay. The message comes up saying oil change required but even after getting an oil chnage it doesn't go away. The check engine oil light does not come on though. Its a 2010 rt with about 98000km. You can hear it while idling and it gets quieter when you put it in gear and then increases for a bit when you put it back in park. Also increases at higher rmps around 2500-3000. bramfrank
It could be piston slap.

I wouldn't hesitate to have it looked at sooner rather than later based on the symptoms you've described. Keep us posted if you can.

srk23
Dodgecacares; i haven't taken it to the dealer since the closest dealer is about 400km away. I did take it to 3 different mechanics. One says something is worn out, the other says i need a new engine all together and the other said it may be a worn out connentor rod. No one has been able to be find out what the cause is 100%. They all said i shouldn't be driving the vehicle at all and i drove about 3500km while having the problem come up(drove from top of the province to the bottom, and back). The change oil indicator light did not light up, instead a message comes up when you first start the vehicle (where the digital campass and thermometer is located). srk23
The mechanic who said the engine needs to be replaced said it was a knock in the engine but why replace the whole engine with another used one instead of fixing it?

And that's exactly how you know which mechanics to avoid. That's a horrible, lazy suggestion some mechanic provided cause he was too damn lazy to actually investigate the problem. I would have demanded my money back and ran as fast as I could. Then posted a horrible review of the shop online for all to see. Just another reason why I never go to a mechanic to do auto work. srk23
Well not to hate on the guy he did investigate alot more than the other 2. Hes dealt with alot of dodge vehicles and has alot of issues with the 3.5l pentastar engines. He basically told me he'll put in a used engine which would cost about $1800 has about 82000km on it or a new engine closer to $5000... the other mehcanic just gave me a estimated cost to fix of $1000-$3000 just from listening to the engine run for about 5 min. The third mechanic who said its probably a connector rod didnt even want to deal with it cause he said the 3.5l pentastar engines are so sketchy you fix one thing something else will go. At this stage, I'd recommend you investigate making time to get your Journey to a Dodge dealer. The experts should be involved considering you have 3 different opinions from independent garages. :shades:
