Swerv
My old man is an Amsoil dealer and I just picked up engine oil and transmission oil. I usually have a guy do my engine oil... It's a shell gas station with a service hub and although some people have their opinions on these places... The dude has always taken care of me and i have never had a problem. What is bothering me is i went to purchase a replacement transmission fluid filter and it seems a bit more complex than just changing the oil and oil filter. This mechanic has been doing this stuff for a while so i dont think he couldnt do it but i was just wondering if i should take it to the dealer or an exclusive transmission place? Again i already have the fluid and filters but when my mom did her amsoil swap they charged her 200 just to change the fluid and filters :/
Journey_SeXT
I know that with my 2011 SXT the transmission is a sealed unit that is dealer serviced only so I would say go to the dealer.
larryl
I have had the fliud changed twice in my 09 RT and the only issue is there is no dipstick in the tranny and a special tool is req'd to measure the fliud I would advise only using Mopar fliud and filter the tranny likes that
Swerv
Thanks for the input guys! Larryl, can you explain to me what sort of tools i would need to do the change and check the fluid level? I will let you know how the Amsoil works out
larryl
It looks like a gauge on the end of a bathroom sink chain for lack of a better term I dont think the actual filter and fluid change is all that different from the old 4sp tranny
allwxflyer
Swerv I wrote an article in another section, on how to adapt your motor oil dipstick to do double duty as a tranny dipstick. It works pretty well on my 2011 Journey. And it will save you $55.00 on buying a tranny dipstick from the dealer.
Cableguy
I have a 2010 SXT with the 3.5 v6. I recently did a spark plug change that required the removal of the air intake that I performed myself easily. I have seen a dip stick tube that is capped for the transmission stating dealer service only in order for the mechanics to fill or check the fluid level. I would like to know if anyone has dropped the transmission pan and have this the fluid and filter change themselves. I would like to do the job myself considering I've done this before with my 2001 Caravan and my 1994 Spirit. Wondering how you may have gone about this? Thanks
OhareFred
Sine my 09 has a lifetime power train warranty, I'm taking mine to the dealer. I might pay a little more now, but when the tranny goes maintence issues are on them.

Have you refernced your owners manual for recommended transmission fluid change intervals? What makes you think you need to service it?
