stephd
I have a 2013 Dodge Journey SXT 4 cylinder and I was at the dealership today regarding some noises, it sounds like a tapping or small burst of machine gun fire ever time I shut the car off. The dealer said it was a heater door actuator and that it could come and go and pretty much was told that I would have to deal with the noise. The other noise I have occurs every time I start the car and go about no more than 100 feet it sounds like a brake spring popping in the front of the car. The dealer heard it but not sure what it is. I bought the car about 5 weeks ago and only have 2000 miles....any one else have this problem or any suggestions? Thanks

stephd
Have you taken your Dodge to the dealership to be checked? Currently I have mine at the dealership per Chrysler's request so they can figure out what it is. If you hear anything let me know. I will update once I here back from Chrysler Edited June 23, 2013 by stephd
bigtsr
Could it be a defective/poorly installed air diverter gate actuator? I have read of this problem and it's described as sounding like a ratcheting or machine gun sound, I hear these actuators on my DJ but they subtle/soft sounds that occur after start/stop. stephd
Yes, the dealership said the "machine gun" sound is the heater actuator door and that it's normal, but according to Chrysler there shouldn't be any noise. My main issue is the spring popping noise that I can feel in the brakes when I first start the car and go about 100 feet, in forward or reverse. Thanks for the info

Please let us know what dealer said after they give you your journey back! It sounded like spring thats stuck and forcefuly stretched. stephd
If anyone is having the spring noise too, please take it to your dealership and complain. If there are enough of us maybe they will work faster to find the problem. The dealership just called and stated that they are still waiting to hear back from Chrysler...not sure what the hold up is. Journeyman425
Did a quick check on DealerConnect to see if there are any service bulletins or technician confirmed repairs, but there are none listed for this concern. Sounds like a mode door behind the dash making noise. I can hear them whirring in my 300M and that is characteristic of their operation but it is certainly not intrusive. I hear them work in my Journey sometimes if I'm sitting in the driveway playing with the radio with the engine off. I would say that a machine gun-like sound is not normal. Appalachian Journey
The continued occurrence of both issues is the result of a faulty dealership.

I know what you are talking about and that is not the issue that I am having. It only happens when I turn the car off. The dealership stated it was the heater door actuator. My main concern is the spring noise that I can feel in the brake pedal. The dealership heard it but does not know where it's coming from so in turn they do not know how to fix it. They have had my new car for almost a week and by the sounds of it I will not see my car for another week or so.
Journeyman425
Sorry, I was more focused on your actuator concern and realized after re-reading your post that you are more concerned with the brake noise. Re-checked for bulletins and Technician Confirmed Repairs on my end but I'm not coming up with anything - yet. If that changes I'll post the results of my search here right away. klingoff
I believe I may be hearing the same noise when driving but to me it sounds like a spring that is releasing tension. It hasn't been of any concern to me because I had the exact same noise on my 2008 Patriot which I put 173,000KM on in 3.5 years. That vehicle had noises galor. The Journey has been much quieter. stephd
I just wanted to give an update.......the dealership hears the noise and have tried a few things but has not found the cause of the "spring" noise, so I am still patiently waiting to see if Chrysler will get back to the dealership with any ideas. Chris1276
While i was in my car last week i observe that noise and i found out that it just happen when the shift lever is in drive or reverse and never made a noise on neutral and park! It made me conclude that the noise is coming from spring on caliper because the wheel wants to roll! I dont know if it should make noise though! larryl
Is the transmission solenoid buzzing when shifting from park to drive or reverse?
stephd
Is the transmission solenoid buzzing when shifting from park to drive or reverse? No, it's not making a buzzing noise. I want to up date and let everyone know that after having my car for 29 days the dealership called and stated that the area manager drove my car and claims that it's a "typical" noise. Not sure how they can determine that a "spring popping" noise that you feel in the brake pedal is "typical". I am now in the process of finding another dealership for a second opinion. Journeyman425
Does your dealership have another, similarly equipped 2013 Journey in stock? If so, ask to test-drive the new car with the service manager and see if you can duplicate the sound in the new one. If you cannot duplicate it in the new car, then go right to yours and drive the same route as you did in the new car and duplicate your complaint to the service manager. That will rule out whether or not the sound is normal (I'm sure that it is not, based on what you are saying, but A to B comparisons always help bolster your case) Once that is demonstrated, then they will continue with diagnosis until it is resolved. Rgwog
I have a 4 cylinder 2013 SXT and do not have a noise in of any kind in mine. It does not sound like it should be a normal noise. I have to agree with Journeyman. Across the board there should not be ANY noises if things are right.
acgiorgio
My 2011 has had both of these noises since I drove it off the lot. Not too concerned but will definately get it taken care of once there are TSB released.
stephd
I took my car to a different dealer and once again they hear the noise but cannot determine exactly where it is coming from, but said it's nothing mechanical that I need to worry about. I love my car but very disappointed with the noises.
Cableguy
I get a similar noise from the front when applying the brakes to stop and then when I release them and start rolling again. I thought it might be the brakes so I am going to service the brakes by taking them apart and cleaning everything. Its something to try while I take the time to swap my wheels for the winter tires. I hope it cures the problem.
