Chris1276
So i have a scheduled 1500km road trip by the end of july! My question is.. Should i make my first oil change before my trip??? or when i get back from this trip!? Mileage wise its still premature but the engine oil stays there since purchase! My 2012 journey is at 2800kms now 85% city driving but she will be one year this coming august! Im confused if it is necessary to make my oil change before my trip or not! Journeyman425
You should change the oil even though the mileage interval has not been reached. Frequent short trips cause oil deterioration over time as well as mileage. From the owner's manual: Required Maintenance Intervals Refer to the Maintenance Schedules on the following pages for the required maintenance intervals. 13000 Km8000 Miles6 Months Change the engine oil and engine oil filter. Rotate the tires, rotate at the first sign of irregular wear, even if it occurs before 8,000 miles (13 000 km). Ask the service advisor to have the oil change indicator reset so that the indicator system is in sync with your next service. Safe trip! Journey_SeXT
Hey Chris, I'm in the same situation as you as the family will be going to Florida. I will be doing the oil change just before and right after the trip. Mind you that i will be doing the oil changes myself so the cost of the changes is not a real concern to me. Already stocked up on the Mobil1 when it was on special at Can Tire. I'll also be changing the brakes before I go as an extra precaution.....I don't want to have any problems with my brakes during my vacation. Chris1276
Thats a very nice idea! I will try to learn to change oil myself also, hopefully its not that hard! Tried to check procedures on you tube but no luck in finding specifically for journey!
Journey_SeXT
I posted oil change instructions in this thread here: http://www.dodgejourneyforum.com/topic/3161-changing-oil-in-36-l-journeys/ and even though it is not the same procedure as the Journeys oil change you can watch this youtube video to get an idea of how it is done: The journey is real easy with the oil filter located at the top. Just make sure that you allow a good amount of time for all the oil to drain, use original Mopar oil filters (get them from dealers parts dept.) and you will need 5.6L of oil to be replaced. Also, please SAVE ALL RECEIPTS of oil filter and oil purchases. Usually i staple them together with a sheet that i create on the computer that gives vehicle info, mileage, date and a brief summary of service preformed. You will need this for warranty purposes in the event that you are challenged by the dealer if the vehicle was maintained. Mrmagoo
I would also change it just for peace of mind. Oil does break down over time even though it still looks clean. With stop and go city driving and our Western Canada winters more frequent oil changes are just added insurance. Most manufacturers would deem this servere driving conditions.
