Successful BIG BRAKE upgrade on 2011 Crew

The pictures were hosted by fototime and they had a catastrophic event a few months ago. All photos were lost and they basically ceased operating.

I lost over 1000 pictures. I had hundreds of how to posts like this one as a member of tdiclub. It will be a monumental task to try to find all the pictures in my backed up drives, but I will see what I can do.

You are really great. Maybe in this case it'll be easier for you to take a note of the date of your posts and search your backup for pictures taken around that dates.

Edit: I've got 2 pictures from webarchive - there are dates on them.

I've just done the big brakes upgrade on all four wheels of my car. Thanks again for the perfect guide. The only issue that remains on my car is the low and spongy brake pedal. It seems like there is no solution to it.

I've tried at least 10 other cars with the same low and spongy brake pedal and I'm really puzzled how often it can be seen and even more puzzled that the owners don't care for it.

Here is the result.

Soft pedal is fixable with hydraulic brake systems. The rear calipers on these cars with the integrated parking brake set up have a tendency to start to seize up if not constantly used, have experienced it. The return spring becomes not strong enough to fully release pads. You can tell by looking at parking brake mechanism if it’s starting to stick a bit.

It also interferes with caliper function so brake bleeding difficult and soft pedal occurs. Either  buy a rebuild kit with seals or buy another caliper.  The second wheel down in your picture is not wearing evenly, it’s a rear wheel. I would start there.

Small 4” piece of clear hose on bleeder screws helps see when air bubbles stop. Cross bleeder pattern front to back starting on passenger rear wheel. Don’t let master go low and allow air in to system. Or pay a mechanic with a vacuum bleeder unit.

I can't say my little "trick" with new/rebuilt REAR calipers will fix this type of problem, BUT....

What I do when installing such calipers is to apply /release the parking brake a couple of times BEFORE bleeding the caliper. This moves the piston manually{not hydraulically} from being "bottomed out in the caliper , allowing more fluid in. With 3 of these cars, I've not had this soft/low pedal situation show up yet and I've done brakes on all of them. I also do the same when just doing pads/rotors after retracting the pistons.

Also watch out for stuck caliper slide pins, another common "quirk".

Thanks both for your answers. The whole brake system (all calipers) was completely revised. All calipers move normally and the rotors and pads are completely new. I had the same soft and low brake pedal with the smaller brakes too. Actually it was perfect (no soft and low) but the dealer made a brake fluid change and then the pedal became soft and low. I use the parking brake every time I park the car. I'll try to perform brake air bleeding wit the diagnostic software.
