bigtsr
It's long been a problem not only specific to MOPARbut the black plastics used on exterior trim itemstend to fade in time to greyish blacks.I have just used a product sold as "Wipe New"detailer and the blacks look better than whenmy DJ was new. It's not the cheapest way to do it nor least timeconsuming but if you follow the instruction to theletter the results are excellent , now to see howlong it lasts , the manufacturer says about 2 yrs
rolly
Thanks bigtsr, I was waiting for someone to write about this. Are there any special precautions needed during application? Do you have to be careful of the paint?

Yes, I really hate the look of those faded plastics. Luckily, our DJs do not have much in the way of black plastic. Some cars are loaded with them in various shades. They look terrible within a few years if the vehicle sits in the sun. I would be interested to know you experience with the wipe new stuff. Peace. bigtsr
Thanks bigtsr, I was waiting for someone to write about this. Are there any special precautions needed during application? Do you have to be careful of the paint? Rolly the package comes with everything you need including nitrile gloves, applicators and instructions in English/French (in case you live in LaSalle lol). There are warnings regarding painted surfaces but as a shaky old fart I managed to avoid any mishaps. It's a small bottle but it goes a long way as I still have about 1/2 left. I was out in the rain this evening and it sheds water like a ducks back , guess I'll have to see if it lives up to its advertising.

As I said in post to Rolly only time will tell with regard to durability, been 4 days only but I like the look and am hopefull of success. burn2011
Thanks bigstr! I don't yet have that problem with my Journey, but I definitely did on my Caliber. I wasn't too sure about the Wipe New so instead I tried Mother's Back to Black ($9/bottle). It worked great! It was more of an oil based product that soaked into the black. I can't wait to hear your long term thoughts on the Wipe New so that I have another option for my Journey when the time comes
bigtsr
My previous car was an '07 Caliber sxt all black and for 5 years I also used Mother's Back to Black and found it worked but had to apply semi annually to keep the black trim the way I liked it , hopefully this will work with less work. burn2011
Have you tried the wipe new on the plastic trim on the side under the doors? Mine has water marks from sitting on the lot. The dealership didn't get it cleaned up during the prep job and it looks horrible!

Yes I used it on all the outside black trim and roof rack plus the windage tray under the wipers . I also did the black door threshold entry trim at each door entrance. Canadian tire has it for $19.99 in this week's flier. 2late4u
bigtsr
Rolly it still is as black as when I applied it although I must confess I haven't washed the DJ very much this winter. rolly
Addicted to Dodge
I must confess I haven't washed the DJ very much this winter. Don't feel bad Bigtsr, I have only washed my Journey once all winter. My Pearl White is looking more like Hurl White. Its embarrassing, thank goodness Spring has almost sprung!! bigtsr
When this crappy wx is over and I detail the DJ the tale will be told with regards to durability of Wipe New - until then it's just another dirty crossover.

Saw this at Crappy tire (Canadian tire to our US cousins) today for $19.99, was going to pull the trigger but wanted to know how good it is first from people that have it. I have a lot of CT dollars to use towards this
bigtsr
Well first hand wash of the new year - no new door dings at least. Here's a pic of the roof rail done with Wipe New last September. I am happy as all the blacks are sparkling black after the brutal winter. rolly

Shame on you bigtsr, I have a Saturn Sky not a Pontiac Solstice Just teasing yah! Hey I was just noticing your fuel economy in your Dodge Journey is much better than mine.
