Check engine light on-no odometer code

My check engine light came on yesterday. It does not flash, but comes on when the car is on and stays on. I tried the turn the key to on three times but I don't get any odometer code. It just runs the cycle and then says "dOnE". I have not found a thread that has been helpful yet, but I'll keep looking. Any help is appreciated as I don't know much about mechanical things.

With respect, I live out in the boonies and I'm hoping to avoid a trip if I can. I may not have a choice I guess.

Well I guess it's either make the trip to Autozone or wait for the delivery of the OBDII code reader. Amazon has a whack of code readers ranging in every price range.to fit your budget. I would recommend investing in basic one as it will save you from any future trips if your vehicle(s) ever get a CEL again.

A solid CEL means a DTC (Diagnostic Fault Code) has been recorded and as pointed out a basic code reader is needed to retrieve the code. Your only options are to have the code read at a shop ($$), Advance or AutoZone (free) or order and have shipped a code reader shipped.

Right now the CEL on our Journey is intermittently on/off - codes indicate it is the EGR (P0406). But I found out the EGR is not cheap - best price was at Rockauto ($82 + shipping). AA and AZ wanted ~$125.

As stated, on solid means it has stored a code. You need a reader to access the PCM to retrieve the code. Hope you never have a flashing check engine light. That is a very bad thing., indicating a misfire. This flashing check engine light means you are doing “mechanical damage” to your vehicle if you continue to drive under these conditions. If you see a flashing check engine light you should seek immediate professional advice. By mechanical damage I am talking about things like the catalytic converter, the exhaust manifold, pistons, rings, valves – virtually all upwards of four-digit repair bills.

Hi all,

I realize that this topic might be a bit old but I am searching for an answer to the CEL problem. Mine came on a couple of weeks ago and I haven't used the car very much since then. The manual is a bit vague in its solution to the problem "Drive it for a few cycles" Besides being a two wheeled transportation device what is a cycle. I thank you for the advice on the "flashing" Light. The other problem I have noted is that the remote starter now started the car then runs for a few seconds then quits. Is it the problem or just a symptom. I will find out tomorrow I guess. Anyway, Is there any place to get the OBDI codes?

Thank you for your continued help.

Welcome to the forum.

Drive "cycle" means get in and drive it a few times. In other words, start it, go for a 15-20 minute drive, stop and turn the vehicle off = one drive cycle.

By asking "is there anyplace to get the OBDI codes", do you mean a list of OBDII (your vehicle is OBD II) codes and what the mean or how to retrieve the codes from the vehicle?

If you are looking for a list of codes and what the mean, or the meaning of a specific code, ask google, plenty of online sites can assist in code diagnostics. Here is an example:

http://www.obd-codes.com/trouble_codes/

If you are asking how to retrieve a code, it has been stated several times in this thread. Dealer, auto parts store or buy a code reader.

I had the CEL on my Journey but after several cycles it cleared. Here is what happened in my case:

I hit the push button to start, but too quickly and not hard enough. The engine started to crank then stopped. I pressed it again and got a long crank time which tripped the CEL. No problems since and I'm more careful when hitting the start button.
