Ryan Mink
My 2010 Dodge Journey started making this noise a couple days ago. I know its hard to get a real good idea from the video. Anyhow here is a link. Any suggestions what this could be? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bJbm1Eys8_8 Edited February 27, 2014 by Ryan Mink

DTSGUY
It sounds to me like one of your Valves or Lifters are going bad. If thats the case then your check engine light will eventually come on unless it has already came on. I would take it to your dealer. If you havent gone over 100K miles it might be covered under warranty. If you continue to drive it like that you will end up stranded on the side of the road. I hope im wrong and its just a minor problem for you. Good Luck
Ryan Mink
I took it to the dealer yesterday. They wanted a $150 deductible to check it out. They said it could be the motor or alternator making the noise without really looking at the car. I decided to post on here just to see before I spent the $150. If it was the motor I would get the money back but not if its the alternator. It only has 41,000 miles on it.
rolly
Do you have another dealer you can go to? I've never had a dealer ask for a a deductible, never mind one for $150.00.
Ryan Mink
They are the only one around. Yesterday I called them because I was not sure of the drivetrain warranty. They told me it was 3 years 36,000 miles. I looked everywhere online and it said 5 year 100,00 for the drivetrain.
DTSGUY
I believe Dodge warranty is 100K on the drivetrain not 36K.
rolly
Are you in the U.S. or Canada? We have Dodge reps- DodgeCares (U.S.) and DodgeCaresCA (Canada) who can help. We also have Journeyman 425 who works for a dealer and they all give excellent support. Maybe they can chime in. jkeaton
You have 3/36000 bumper to bumper, 5/100000 powertrain. Alternator is not covered by powertrain. Most shops will charge a "diagnostic" fee just to look at your car, which is normally an hour of labor. $150 for an hour of labor is kind of excessive, IMO. Are there any other shops you can go to? Our 09 alternator started making a noise, I was able to isolate using an automotive stethoscope. Took it in and sure enough, it needed a new alternator. I could have replaced it myself, but they are over $300 for a rebuilt one. We purchased an extended bumper to bumper when we bought it so the warranty covered the alternator replacement (minus a $100 deductible). Journeyman425
Jkeaton is correct on coverage. Do you have a Chrysler Service Contract? I can run your VIN and verify any coverages for you . Post the last 8 digits of your VIN; you already posted the mileage; I'll check. Ryan Mink
I bought the car used. It was a certified pre owned! I have had NOTHING but trouble since I got the car. New brakes after 2 months, windshield almost flew off why driving (in shop 2 times), rear strut bad already, window button broke. I just cant take much more of this car right now. Shouldnt have so many problems with this low miles. last 8 digits of vin are AT141950 Thanks for any help!
Hawaii
That doesnt sound like an alternator bearing.....more like a dry motor, have you checked oil level???
Ryan Mink
Yes the oil level is fine. That was the first thing I checked. The oil was also changed about a month ago.
Journeyman425
Your Journey still has the factory powertrain warranty in effect. You also have a Certified Pre-Owned warranty which covers you to 7 years or 100K miles once the factory coverage expires. The 7/100 warranty carries the $150.00 deductible. The powertrain warranty has a zero deductible. Your dealership has access to the same info that I do. Whoever you spoke with did not look up your contract by VIN, or they did not know what they were talking about. If your issue is a powertrain component failure, then you are covered with no deductible. If the problem is not covered, you may be responsible for a diagnostic fee. Diagnostic fees are set by the individual dealers. You might consider calling the service manager to discuss your service appointment. It's hard to tell by the video, but that sounds like something internal to the engine to me. Ryan Mink
Ok thanks for the response. I am going to take the belt off tommorow. That will tell me fast if its coming from a pulley or the motor.
