cskmom
This is new for me because in my old car, I could just reach and place the suction cup to the windshield....on the Dodge Journey that isn't easily doable. Where do you guys place you GPS and which holder do you use? This is just plain asking for trouble http://www.skidmore.edu/~pdwyer/portfolio/e/images/dash02.jpg TIA Edited March 22, 2014 by cskmom
DTSGUY
I put mine in the far left corner. I attach the suction cup that came with my Garmin Nuvi to the windshield. It works great for me.
Lebowski
I fabricated my own holder using epoxy putty.

bramfrank
If your GPS is also your handsfree, then sticking it on the left side simply means that the microphone is aimed out the window. I ran a wire from the fuseblock to the headliner to power mine and it is suctioned to the windshield so that it is centered above the rear view mirror. As it happens, I also have a dash cam which is fastened to the junction of the headliner and windshield just ahead of me seating position. Neither device is directly in my line of sight and both work very well where they are located.

chimo79
In my previous car, I used a weighted beanbag type of holder with a suction surface in the centre and a high friction surface on the bottom. The device came with an articulated arm that had a suction cup on one end and a round 'Garmin' ball on the other. It was easy to move but would stay in place even under rather hi G maneuvers. It never failed because of a failure of the friction surface but the suction cup would fail, especially in the sun and heat, and even then, the surfaces had to be very clean. With the journey, I got a similar device that is a bit more flexible and does not rely on a suction cup. It has a high friction bottom but the top has a locking mechanism which holds the articulating ball post without suction. I place it to the left of the instrument panel 'hump'. I may try the right side but I like to keep a camera handy there (I use a small high friction mat made of the same (or similar) material as on the bottom of the GPS holder). My GPS is fully controllable by voice (in most cases). It is a Garmin Nuvi 2595. I can use my cell phone through Bluetooth with either the Garmin GPS or the DJ Uconnect 8.4. Am undecided which is best.

Rgwog
I use the sandbag mount for my Garmin and sit it on the smooth spot right on top of the dash in the middle. Never had any problems with sliding or falling off. Journey_SeXT

Journey_SeXT
Just like Rgwog I suctioned it on the smooth part of the dash.....you will need to make sure that you clean that part where you will suction to with warm water and not to have any greasy interior dash cleaner/protectant as it will make the suction only last for only a few hours. My Garmin came equipped for this type of installation with a plastic dish & two sided tape on the one side so you can suction on the dish but there is no way I would use any type of adhesive on that part of the dash. The only real drawback to this method is that you do see the ring from the suction cup after it is removed and takes a bit of effort to have it removed so it is not noticeable in the day. Anyhow I found this location to be the best for viewing your GPS and the least obstructive when driving. OhareFred
sandbag type holder in the center of the dash. FYI, some states will not allow anything to be stuck on the windshield.
chimo79
I have the same problem with my Garmin suction .......care to post a pic or link to this new device that doesn't rely on the suction? Sorry I missed this question. Here is the link: https://buy.garmin.com/en-US/US/shop-by-accessories/mounts/portable-friction-mount/prod63953.html#gallery-dialog It's a fairly standard friction beanbag but the neck and ball are attached and locked in place without any suction cup.
