Radar Detector Mount/Wiring

Recommended Posts

Hey y'all! Just purchased a Escort 9500ix and have been looking at better ways to mount than sticking suction cups to the window. There's a couple companies that make mounts that attach to the rear view mirror stem that look really cool, and there's a company that makes a wire that will tap into the power to the auto dimming mirror. One problem, the mirror on the Journey doesn't have an exposed connector like most others do. Does anybody here have any experience with these? I really like the idea of not having a cord hanging, but I don't wanna hose up my mirror either. Thanx!!

Journeys don't have (at least my SXT) power mirrors, so, you can't use the smartcord (the cord that allows to power the radar from the mirror). I have power mirror in my Town and Country and it is very convenient and clean look, but doesn't work for DJ.

Regarding the mount: I use Stickycup (https://www.escortradar.com/store/stickycup.html) to mount it to the windshield. The reason is that other mirror mounts are more expensive and I don't feel they will fit the DJ's mirror. I haven't tried, though, so it might work. Besides, with the windshield mount you can place the radar wherever you want, even above the mirror, which apparently is not an option with the mirror mount. I have SmartRadar, so I don't need to have it in the plain view, so I placed it behind and above the mirror. I don't see it from the driver's seat at all and it doesn't distract the view. One disadvantage: the stickycup is REALLY hard to unstick from the windshield. I read that escort received many negative reviews due to extremely strong sticking power of this unit. It is removable, but, man, it is so sticky :) So think twice before you place the radar and place it once.

Regarding the wiring: SmartRadar came with several cords: cig lighter plug (not clean install), smartcord (doesn't work for DJ) and hardwire. I ended up hard wiring the radar to the fuse box as this is the cleanest set up you can have in the car, IMHO. You can buy the hard wire kit from escort or search ebay or amazon for cheaper deals. Easy DIY, or your electronics installer can make it for cheap (less than 1 hour of labor).

Hope this helps.

Mine has power, its a self dimming mirror so it has to get juice. I can see the wires under the little plastic cover. It just doesn't have the exposed connector to tap directly into

That's what I mean, not have been very clear. It has some power inputs, but not exposed and not available to tap into, like those in higher trims, where you actually have a power on/off button.

If it is like my other MOPARs, it has the connector, but, in most cases, it is under the overhead console. My Jeep's unit plugged into a master termination along with the over-head lights and the rain sensor. All of it under the overhead console. It is much easier (cheaper) to use ugly connectors and hide them behind the headliner or console, now that most vehicles have an overhead console, than it is to miniaturize a connector and have it look nice, but, exposed. Even the units that have an on/off switch (my Jeep did), the switch, itself is integral to the mirror (a tiny button on the back of the mirror not accessible to connect to...I suppose you could try to disassemble the mirror, but, it is not designed to be taken apart), but, the connector is buried either under the headliner or behind the console. I suspect the DJ's is under the overhead console...

Good point webslave... I can't believe no one else thought about that area. Most likely there are power feeds up there.
