devinelmore
*FIRST POST* So I was told by the service guy at the dealer to wait for the computer to tell me I need an oil change... am I right to follow his advice? I have a '13 journey thanks in advance
2late4u
read your manual it tells you when your oil needs to be changed.
Journey_SeXT
Unless you are in the severe duty situation like towing, police, taxi, or city driving 3,000 miles/3 months is a little too soon considering oils can go much longer than that. If you do low mileage then 6 months should be the maximum time before you do your next oil change. As 2late4u mentioned you can check the owners manual to refer to their OCI as the manual trumps whatever your dealer tells you.. I personally like to replace mine at about 8000 km's/6 months (5000 miles) with synthetic oil.
jkeaton
Your owners manual is a great source of information on maintenance schedules for your car. Personally, I dont wait for the light. 6 months/6000 miles. Full synthetic.
Nmbr1stunna80
We just got our journey a few months ago, I looked in the owners manual and it said to wait for the cars computer to tell me. Not really satisfied with that I asked a guy at the dealership that worked in the service area and he told me at 7,000 miles. If I was you I'd contact the dealer you bought yours from and double check. I will prob check a with mine again as well lol

Lobitz68
The computer calculates your oil change interval based on the driving conditions you experience. Both my 2012 Avenger and my 2014 DJ have this feature and the interval is NEVER the same. I've gone as far as 8,000 miles on my Avenger (ok according to the manual) and as little as 5,000. The shorter cycle was in the winter when I'm sitting in traffic more due to shitty roads... The first oil change on my DJ was right around the 4,000 mile mark (winter)... I always use full synthetic Mobil 1 on all of my vehicles along with extended service oil filters. jkeaton and 2late4u
xcaliber81
Ok assuming im doing my first oil change a bit early is there a way to reset this?
2late4u
as it has been said before ,read your manual it will tell how to reset it very easy...also back of the book is a great place to write down your service work done to your journey....... xcaliber81
I read the book and it said nothing about reseting anything. My 2008 dodge caliber I had to turn the ignition to run and pump the gas pedal 3 times to reset the change oil message.

Same process for the Journey, but if you are changing it early there is nothing to reset. To me this sounds like a nightmare to keep track of, but go ahead and change it if you're really that concerned. I would wait for DJ to tell you it's ready though personally...much easier to manage and well within the warranty requirements. BTW, the process is in your manual, you must be looking in the wrong place. jkeaton

Yep it's the same, push ignition to run, then pump the gas pedal 3 times withint 10 seconds, then turn ignition off. It's in the manual. It's in the manual. What I don't get is what is getting reset... If the light isn't on yet then there is nothing to reset. I'm pretty confident it will still come on when it thinks the oil should be changed and ignore the fact that it was changed early and that the change interval is off... A lot of people don't get that the machining processes these days produce vehicles with very tight tolerances and that the manufacturer recommended oil changes are more than sufficient to keep the engine running just fine for a LONG time... This isn't the 60's anymore, no need to waste time and money changing fluids that don't need it. jkeaton

Cheers!
