lemdog Posted September 16, 2014 Report Share Posted September 16, 2014 hey all, just doing some winter tire/steel wheel shopping and i am wondering if its manditory to get TPS sensors installed into the winter tires. i know if i dont it "may" throw off my TPMS in the car. in my previous car i did have a TPMS system with sensors in my summer tires, but my winter tires/wheels did not have the sensors installed and all that happened was the system "chimed" once upon car startup to remind me it couldnt sense the tires and never bothered me again. (until i started the car the next time....... but it was no big deal to me and couldnt care less about TPS in my winters). just working with a budget and to get these things added is like another $200.00+ on top of tires/wheels. again i couldnt care less if they werent installed in my winters. so, anyone going without TPS in their winter tires and if so, does the TPMS inside the car remind you once or does it continuously ding in your face? if it only goes once, im not going to bother paying another $200.00+ on top of a winter package. any response will be helpful. thanks! Lawdog1911 Posted September 16, 2014 Report Share Posted September 16, 2014 It will remind you at start up with the ding, and the light will stay on. the light don't bother me being on, just the thought of not knowing if my tires are low or flat is my concern. lemdog Posted September 16, 2014 Author Report Share Posted September 16, 2014 ok, to save approx $200.00+ i can handle a ding on startup and a light being on. i managed for 8 winters with my previous vehicle (2002 Chrysler 300M Special) with no TPS in my winter set, just a ding on startup with a message in my overhead console "check tire pressure system". but that went away once my summers went back on and i retrained the system. i am constantly giving my car a visual every time i am around it and tire level is usually what i check for TPMS or not. Come spring, when you re-install your summer wheels you get one chime and the car figures out which sensor is where and that's the end of it. It shows no info for tire pressure on the EVIC & no lights or dings during the whole winter season. Went in to see if there was a transmission update, had them try and program the new tps sensors, the scanner didn't even see them. But I've ran all summer without them. dj cowboy Posted September 18, 2014 Report Share Posted September 18, 2014 Does your remote start work with the TPMS sensors? My car won't start with the factory remote when I have a tire low on air. I hope your dealer didn't charge for his 'sensor check', because the TPMS sensors aren't programmed, they're sensed, at least on the second gen (11 and onward) Journeys. xcaliber81 Posted September 28, 2014 Report Share Posted September 28, 2014 When I took them out of my caliber I got 1 ding per missing sensor and the light stayed on, it was rather annoying and to boot if I had any other lights on I got another ding per light the most I had at once 6 dings lol. cruisinbill Posted November 20, 2014 Report Share Posted November 20, 2014 When I purchased my '13 Journey R/T and winter tires with it (Michelin Ice Xi3), I asked about TPMS as I had them on my '08 Caliber SRT4. On my Caliber, I purchased Bridgestone Blizzak's on 18" steel rims, including TPMS sensors. Unfortunately, I got several false positive readings of low tire pressure during the winter [it does get very cold here in winter], resulting in many a stop at a local service station to do an air fill only to find that the air pressure was OK or not low enough to trigger the alarm. So I opted not to install them in my Journey and have had no issue with air pressure last winter or so far this winter. I just make a point to check my tire pressure regularly. Hah, got the chime after 15 minutes of driving the other day after switching to winter tires. The light stayed on until the vehicle was turned off and hasn't come back on yet. I never noticed that it came on before as my wife always had the Journey and my short little 5 minute drive probably wasn't long enough to trigger the sensor or better yet, no sensor.
