Front End "Clunk" while Braking Over Bumps

Recommended Posts

  • 5 months later...

Hello!

I have a 2016 Journey that I just bought with 31,000 mi. I have this klunk over bumps while braking and it is going back to the dealer on Tuesday. The replaced the sway bar bushings, and told me it was "fine". I saw there was a TSB but for an older model. Has anyone had this issue fixed on a 2016?

Everyone has this issue. Dealers first option is sway bar bushings. That won't fix it and you'll end up taking it back. Force their hand. Replace the strut mounts

It has been at the dealer since Tuesday (it is now friday), and I did tell them that I wanted the struts, mount/isolators replaced. They have yet to do so.

Just got my Journey back after the dealer having it for TWO weeks! They replaced the LF strut and mount, control arm and ball joint, rotor, bushings, and it is STILL rattling over bumps while braking.

Three times it is considered a lemon correct?

You will need to check the lemon laws in your state.

It is likely the opposite strut that is making the noise.  Or, it is the shock itself on the strut.  It is hard to tell with the sound, as it seems to move to somewhere else, fooling you.  If it is not under warranty, get a used one at a scrap yard and put it in yourself (great youtube video on it), or have a local shop do it for you.  I think the struts are side specific, so left wont fit right etc.  Have a local mechanic check it out for you.  Sometimes they pick up stuff that the dealer doesn't.  Anywho....good luck.

You've got a 2018 still under warranty? Take it back to the dealer and tell them that answer is absolutely unacceptable. Have them go with you for a drive in both yours and a new one on the lot and have them prove that they all do it.

My 2016 does not, except for a very negligible sound that any vehicle would make. The fact that it drives so quiet is one reason I bought it. At about the 28000 mile mark, it developed a significant rattle in the front when going over bumps. One dealer diagnosed the problem correctly but the service was dismal and the repair never took place. I took it to another dealer, with no mention of the previous visit, and drove it out 1.5 hours later with the same diagnosis and fully repaired. In this case, it was the sway bar link on the left side. As I drove away, I had truly forgotten how quiet it was supposed to be. It was, and still is, a pleasure to drive again.

Be reasonable but DO NOT accept a BS response if there is a real problem.

My sales guy and I took a 2017 with 20,000 km and it was doing the same if not louder, the service manager said see they all do it like I said. I even called head office and they basically said tough if that’s what the dealership said then there’s nothing they could do. So I’m going to another dealership on Saturday and see what they say. When I was booking the appointment they said there shouldn’t be any sound from the front end.

I agree this is not acceptable and I’m not the type of person to let this go.

I have a 2016 dodge journey r/t fwd and been having this issue since May. I’ve taken it to non-chrysler dealerships and chrysler dealerships. Nobody knows what the problem is. Struct w/mount, control arm, sway bar links, and sway bar bushings have been changed. No luck. I’m really just about to go trade this in.

It´s a common issue a think... bad engineering process or design.

I experienced the same when I had the 2009, the 2012 and the same with my 2015.

with my current 2015, the dealer changed the front struts and the struts absorber bases, front hubs and I can´t remember what else... but that elimanted another noise, that noise was a little "click click" with grinds sound like and old truck suspension. But the other noise, a "clonk clokn" in certain bumps at the road, still there...

Other common noise (only in Journey) when you turn off the engine, you can hear a triple tic (tic tic tic) sounds like a dolphin LOL.

But I still in love with the Journey  :D

Well folks i hate to hear of you're troubles but i believe we are all in this together.Dodge just wants to dismiss us without owning up to there problems.I'm sure there must be a engineer that has a fix but i believe it's a expensive one so they are hiding behind time hoping you're warranty dries up b/4 they get to it.

Can anyone record that clunk or rattling sound or give a link on youtube of a similar sound. I want to hear it because I'm not a native american and it's difficult to find the right word to describe the sound I hear from the suspension components. I think it is like a crunching sound coming from rubber or plastic part, not from metallic one.

Mine was a "knock" very similar to the sound of someone knocking on a wooden door.
