2011 8" Screen Radio issues (Handsfree Module?)

Recommended Posts

A month ago, during the deep cold (-24), my battery died. I have since put a new one in but now have issue with my phone not connecting.

I took it to the dealer and they said I need a $450 Handsfree Module.

Is that my only option?

I assume you have tried re-pairing the phone with the vehicle?

have you also tried pulling the battery cable for 20 minutes or so and then reconnecting it?

Does the radio show the phone icon?

I found the following out on the web - it can't hurt to try it:

I called u-connect and she ran me thru a possible soft-reset - TURN ACCESSORIES ON, BUT NOT MOTOR. PRESS AND HOLD THE TWO BUTTONS ON THE STEERING WHEELicon1.png - VOICE RECOGNITION AND THE PHONE SYMBOL - FOR 30 SECONDS. THEN, RELEASE AND TURN OFF THE ACCESSORY ENGINE. THEN, SHE ACTUALLY SAID 'OPEN THE DOOR FOR 30 SECONDS AND CLOSE IT'. IT DOESN'T ALWAYS WORK AND IT DIDN'T WORK FOR ME.

The icon will not work. When I touch it, the icon highlights but nothing happens. Also in the settings, the same thing happens when I touch the Phone/Bluetooth option.

Pulled the battery with no success.

The procedure did not reset for me. Nor did the Hot/Cold Video.

I just searched dodge journey uconnect. It it the first item on the list.

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Jeep-Dodge-Chrysler-UConnect-Phone-Hands-Free-Wireless-Kit-MOPAR-GENUINE-OEM-NEW-/320771037964?fits=Make%3ADodge%7CModel%3AJourney&hash=item4aaf719b0c&vxp=mtr

But, this is the kit to add Uconnect. I have no idea if it would replace the factory unit. If not, I apologize for leading you astray.

Nope.

The fact that it comes with a microphone and the text says it requires a hard 'phone' button on the radio face ought to have been a tip - the application list provided by the vendor (who is the one who sold me my backup camera, so I'm surprised) is plain wrong. But the title DOES say that it fits the RAM 1500 (and, for some reason, the Cherokee and Wrangler). It isn't the title that says it is for a Journey, but the application list, which is miscoded.

A quick search based on the supplied manufacturers part number took me to the Mopar site.

This is the kit for something called an 'RES' radio that comes in a RAM pickup.

Unfortunately, and as I wrote before, I have not seen the OEM BT module for the 2011+ Journey for sale on eBay OR on the Mopar accessory site because it isn't sold as a user-installable accessory. You'd need to research the real part number (and the location where it is installed in the vehicle) and then hit up a scrap yard to sell you one if you want to save money.

Edit: So I decided to play the Google game . . . . . .

The good news is that this HAS been discussed before on this site - while the part number is not provided, the relevant pages from the service manual and such can be found here:

http://www.dodgejourneyforum.com/topic/5030-where-is-hfm-hands-free-module-located-on-journeyfreemont/

And from what I gather here is the Mopar parts page for the module:

http://www.moparpartsoverstock.com/p/DODGE_2014_JOURNEY/MODULE-Telematics/10253306/68209686AB.html

Amazing what Google can do if you phrase things properly.

If you want to do some reading about the data bus, and uConnect, this is an interesting document, replete with descriptions of modules and their locations in the vehicles that use our version of the uConnect (Charger, 300 and Journey):

Hi Rckcrwlr,

Sorry to hear about your concern. Were you having any previous concerns with your hands-free module? I have a screengrab attached below of a TSB (08-008-12 REV. A) that may apply for you. The TSB is meant to repair hands free module symptoms with a software enhancement.

Yes it has but not to the point of complete shut down. I have had two other issues with the radio over the years. One was a flash issue (?) and other was something with Sirius/XM (that still isn't right).

Unfortunately my dealer is not one that I trust and only go there when I have no other option.

They are always trying to run the bill up instead of helping a customer get things back on track.

One example is the rear sensors. One of mine broke...I asked what the price of one was and they hit me with $380. I just wanted the sensor, everything else is fine. They said you can't do it, have to by a whole rear bumper shroud. I bought the sensor off ebay for $25 shipped and it is fixed. I would have paid $50 for it from them to support my local dealer but no luck.

This dealer, unfortunately is a walk from my house but when I go buy my new Jeep...I will be traveling an hour away.

The first one is a possibility if it works. The second one is not. The price for the one from the Journey is, to my mind below the threshold of pain, so even if it doesn't work you can always go back to eBay and buy another and still have hundreds of dollars left in your pocket - and once you figure out how to access it the first time it becomes a much quicker, less daunting task - I can swap out my radio in less than 3 minutes now - the first time it took 15 because I was concerned about breaking things because I didn't quite know what to expect.

There seem to be a few of the modules on the site if you search with the part number and leave out the suffix letters, but that Journey one is the cheapest.

The possible donor vehicles are the 300, the Charger and the Journey - (I now know more about this stuff than I care to).

But are you going to be upset if the problem turns out to be a broken wire in one of the connectors and NOT the modules . . . . .

For $50 it's worth the chance, IMO. That is one of the perils of working on cars.

Sorry to hear about your bad experience with your dealership. As bramfrank said, please keep us posted on this!
