The reasoning is that the vehicle is negative grounded , if your

wrench hits bare metal undoing the NEG no big deal while undoing

positive is a dead short across the battery source and who knows

what you'll screw up along with the sparks.

Horse manure - if the positive cable isn't connected to the battery and touches the chassis it is no different than if the negative cable is disconnected and touches the battery positive terminal.

In the olden days that wanted you to connect the positive lead of a booster cable to the battery positive and the negative to the chassis ground point as the second point of contact so that any battery fumes floating around the battery wouldn't be ignited by a spark. But the electrons really don't care whether the positive or the negative is disconnected - you end up with the same inrush current when you reconnect things.

According to my manual (Bible), you connect the positive first when jumping a car off. To disconnect, you do it the opposite way with negative removed first.

So in both instances at one point just the positive is attached.

The whole thing reads retarded as hell in the manual. I know we arent jumping the car off, but the same would apply to connecting and disconnecting power to the battery.

So logic would dictate removing the negative terminal.

----

Touching the negative to any part of the car is safe because the car is naturally grounded and thus negative. That is why it directly touches the firewall. The positive is protected by a cap because it will short if it touches the sheet metal while the negative is connected.

.

You're getting a charge out of this, aren't you?

Ooops - I was thinking touching the wrench to anything metal when removing the positive cable. Been there, done that!

My thinking when I said remove the positive cable was that the radio has its own ground wire. if the positive is still attached, the radio may not reset because it may ground itself, UNLESS you disconnect at the battery. I said disconnect at the jumping post. I also assumed that it he poster would know not to let the cable touch metal, which was poor judgment on my part! Although, I think just about everyone who's turned a wrench has had the exciting experience of shorting the positive cable/wrench and seeing sparks and didn't blow up the car...lol

I agree that if you take the POS off at the battery the cable touching anything

is moot.

I was assuming (because of the DJs unique battery placement) that Joe Average

would try it at the jumper point hence the wrench in the monkey works.
