Aftermarket DVD/Navigation System

Recommended Posts

Hi all. I have a 2012 Dodge Journey which I am enjoying a lot. However I would like to install an aftermarket navigation system and DVD player. The problem is is there a system I can install that I won't lose the features to control the climate on the touch screen? I haven't been able to find anything like that. If someone could help shed some light on this I'd really appreciate it.

I just use my iPhone6 for NAV. I pair it with Bluetooth, and plug it into the USB. Doing this, the radio volume will drop to allow Siri to call out route changes. If you buy a Lockpick, it will allow you to watch a DVD.

To answer the question you actually asked, the answer is no.

I personally would not use a cell phone as a navigator - the display is non-optimal and the apps not as good as a dedicated Garmin would be (TomTom is better for nav in Europe, by the way).

But I decided to swap out my RE2 (non nav 8.2" display radio) for the RB5 - it was worth it for me and I'm not overly concerned with reports that some people have had reliability issues with that radio model. I haven't and presumably 99% of the other DJ, 300 and Dodge Charger owners who have this model haven't either.

Currently I'm not aware of aftermarket solutions for the Journey. I imagine anything available would just add the aftermarket radio to the existing OEM radio and screen to maintain OEM uConnect functions.

Actually, cell phone navigation is superior to Garmin and TomTom in almost every way. The only area dedicated devices excel in is being available when a data connection is not. I use google maps for everything, and always used it in spite of the factory nav in my old Charger, and the Garmin nav offered by my Kenwood in my 300M (since has been replaced with a Nexus 7 tablet). When you know you're going to be off the data connection, you can download maps to your phone. I downloaded Nokia HERE maps for Ontario when I was in Toronto last week, and Google is offering a better way of downloaded metro areas for offline navigation this fall.

One of these days I will get a windshield mount that will hold my phone up in my Journey so I can use it more effectively. Being able to simply say, "OK Google Now, navigate to [insert address, business, or crossroads here]" is far better than anything I've seen lately from Garmin or TomTom, and I don't have to drop a few hundred dollars on a standalone when Google Maps is free of charge, and updates frequently with zero cost.

Couldn't agree more, google maps for life, yo!

Instead of a windshield mount, have you tried the little cubby hole under the display screen? If you have the 4.3" screen that is...you just flip the little cubby liner around and bam, a free little stand that fits a big smart phone horizontally perfect!
