Easy Rider
Have a 2013 Journey Crew. Recently noticed that the 2 arms that hold up the rear hatch when opened are rusting. The rust is concentrated in the area where the chrome inner cylinder meets the outer black cylinder. It was fairly heavy rust so i cleaned it up and applied a dab of rust inhibitor to the area, being careful not to get any on the inner chrome tube. We live in an area where the roads are heavily salted in the winter and I realize this is a rust haven for vehicles but am mystified this is happening on a 2 year old vehicle with 17,000 km's. Anybody else out there having this issue? Thanks in advance! dhh3
dhh3
So far, I have been through one salty winter. No visible rust. This is odd because the only time that area is exposed is when the hatch is open.

It's possible that moisture is getting in there. That said, mine looks fine too. Might want to pay closer attention to it when washing the DJ. dhh3

Strange happening , my DJ has been thru 4 central Ontario winters (GTA) and has little or no rust any where like that , ask the dealer maybe they're poor quality batch. rolly and dhh3

Easy Rider
Update on my original post from 21 Oct 15, brought the 13' Crew to the dealership and they said it was due to the liquid inside the cylinder that leaked and caused the rusting. Sounds strange to me as both rear arms were replaced due to rust. Anyhow, they ordered the part and changed them on warranty, just glad it's repaired and cost me zilch... 2011DodgeRamJourney
I had to replace my rear hatch arms--seals blew out. I could not find the ones that matched so went with ones a hair bigger. My question is could a longer arm make the hatch not close all the way? I have to take a pic of the rear and ask opinions. I thought a longer arm would just make the piston not be fully extended when the hatch was up....did not think any difference when closed. jkeaton
Yes. If they are not the right size it will cause issues. I had to replace my rear hatch arms--seals blew out. If they are not the same size, it will cause problems somewhere.
BlindSquirrel
I've never blown a seal... it was just icecream
2011DodgeRamJourney
I've never blown a seal... it was just icecream It looked just like a shock that has blown a seal. Oil all down the hatch. When I took the shock off, you could pull the arm out with your hand. Wife said when it blew it sounded like a snake in the back hatch
