Brand new journey-Sputtering Engine

New to the forum and Dodge. 2 weeks into my wife's company vehicle delivery, still less than 500km on her Journey, it's begun sputtering and stalling inexplainably as though it's not getting fuel. I've yet to experience so I apologize if this is too vague, understandably hard to diagnose a car problem with second hand info... I think it's an SE model but I could be mistaken, seems like a base model or close to it, engine is a 4 cylinder and it's a 2016. Is this a common problem on these cars?

Today before it "choked" and came back to life from resting idle at a traffic light, the gas gauge mysteriously went to empty quickly and bounced back to half tank where it most likely should be after a fill up and 281 km on the odometer... Not sure if these problems are related just trying to describe it as much as possible.

Any help would be great...

That's the plan, it's a company supplied vehicle so to us there'll never be any cost, check engine light isn't on, just thought I'd poke around and see what came back, it's like a vapour lock out almost, I've been wondering if some how there are air bubbles in the gas line. Started a couple days ago and has gotten worse, going back to the dealer tomorrow and (shameless plug) back in the old faithful Sequoia my wife goes!!!

Thanks for the reply....

Yup, I was going to suggest your got watery gasoline until you said the gas gauge went down and back up again.

Possibly a loose connector, in my humble opinion. These things are pretty darned reliable, but teething problems are always a possibility.

The 4 cylinder engine is available on the base model, called the CVP - Canada Value Package, the SE Plus and the SXT in Canada. The lowest trim level in Canada for the 6 cylinder engine is the SXT.

As a company car I suspect it is likely a base model - if your tail lights aren't LED, but rather use conventional incandescent bulbs and you don't have deep tinted windows, then that is the model you have. If you have LED tail lights and the 4 cylinger engine and there is no SXT emblem on the right rear, then you have an SE Plus.

Use it well.

Vandalism confirmed this morning after a little time behind a row truck.... Any ever heard of a gas tank filled with a fire extinguisher?..... So bizarre, repair estimate just below $4000, and obviously not cover under warranty. Poor thing barely had 300km on it....

Last pic is what I thougt was an egg....

Well, that sounds like the basis for an insurance claim . . . . and get out and buy a locking gas cap before you put the vehicle back on the street.

$4K sounds like a awful lot of money to clean out the fuel tank and possible replace the fuel lines . . . but that's just me.

If the vehicle is in visual range of your place at night you might want to consider buying a camera and recorder to watch the vehicle and record what goes on . . . . . you can check the video quickly if the device has high speed playback abilities (you can review an hour of video in under 8 minutes at 8X) and many of these systems can detect, list and advance to movement events at the click of a mouse, making the review process really painless.

Obviously a morning walk-about is going to be a daily requirement until you can figure out who the culprit is.

Wondering though about that 'gas gauge went to zero and back' report, however.

Good luck

Oh man, I feel for you! That looks like ABC extinguisher powder. Not just you gas tank, but all fuel lines and injectors will need to be cleaned or replaced. Not to mention the damage to your top end. Get a police report and document this. If they ever catch the basterds you can go after them for $$ ( at least here you can). That powder is corrosive to aluminum parts and canget into everything and everywhere, as well as getting like concrete. Not funny at all. Best of luck....
