Coolant leak

Hi al,

I have a 2010 Journey R/T and it has sprung a leak.

I have taken it to two shops and no one can figure it out.

I have attached a photo but the fluid is leaking through the rectangular slots at the bottom of the piece shown by red arrow.

I just got a call back from my Dodge parts guy and after 2 hours of searching (I showed him the piece and left him a photo) they determined it was the EGR valve.

Is it the EGR valve and why would coolant be leaking from it?

Is there something else close that could leak and it is just running through the EGR valve?

The shop at my dealer is cloased today only parts open..

Cheers

Yes, my understanding of an "EGR valve" is that it opens a cavity between the intake and exhaust manifolds to facilitate Exhaust Gas Recirculation. I'm thinking if it has coolant coming from it, and it IS the EGR valve, you have bigger problems. And, according to what I have found, that IS the EGR valve, but again, no logical reason for it to have coolant coming from it.

Hi guys,

Yeah there is no logical reason that's why I was hoping maybe someone has seen this before.

This is actually the second time it has happened to me.

The first time I took it to the shop and they replaced the coolant temp sender. At the time I thought "gee that's a funny looking temperature sender". But it wasn't leaking anymore so I just went "OK, what do I know" That was about two years ago.

I now know that even though the temp sensor is in the vicinity of the EGR they aren't connected so I'm left scratching my head.

Oh well, back to the dealer in the morning.

I'd post a video but its too big

That is the 3.5L engine? I've got the Pentastar, so can't go and look for comparison purposes. Have you checked the rad hose above it for a split or pin hole? It looks awful close to the top of the valve, maybe it's got a hole worn in it?

And, I agree with 2late4U, that's a nasty leak.

Yup it aint pretty.

But coolant temperature of engine is good never gets above "normal"

A ding went off in my head, perhaps frost plug. Gotta squeeze in behind and take a look.

What is weird is I had it "fixed" before as mentioned above.

This time I had flushed the cooling system and perhaps the frost plug had enough stuff on it to plug the leak when flushed it cleaned it off.

I'll let you all know

Yes it is water.

I had just flushed the system and was rinsing with water. That and as everything was being pumped out aI replaced with more water.

Wasn't going to throw Coolant down the drain for a number of reasons :)

Well apparently my epiphany was correct.

It was a frost plug located just behind the EGR. Hole was such that it sprayed directly into the EGR giving the appearance it was the EGR.

There ya have it . Bunch of money later and its fixed..

Update, Well I was a little too quick to say it was fixed. Dealer told me it would be ready in morning.

Apparently wasnt so easy. .

They tried 4 times to install a new plug each time it leaked.

On the last go they packed it with hightech sealant. tried to pressure test it and the heater hoses were leaking and the Y connector was also cracked. These are notorious issues on this engine. 2 weeks to get heater hoses and parts. Such high demand that they cant keep up with need for them. Even after they replace hoses they aren't sure if they fixed the frost plug issue.

The frost plug had a great deal of corrosion which makes me wonder where else it is badly corroded. If leak not stopped next step is a new cylinder head.

So made only decision I could, got rid of car while it was running.

SO anyone with a 2010 or earlier V6 I feel sorry for you, get rid of it while its running....

  • 1 year later...

I have a 2014 Journey 3.6 and it has overheating issues too.  Coolant leak which dealership said may have been a loose radiator cap 2 weeks after i bought it used from a local dealer in 2015.  2 weeks later overheating again lead to blown head gaskets.  Warranty covered all work required luckily.

Now guess who is acting up again in March 2017.  Coolant leaked out of reservoir with temp. needle bouncing around. Took car into dealership and they pressure tested system and stated it may have been a loose radiator cap but found nothing wrong. Does the cap just vibrate loose or maybe whomever did our last oil change and checked fluids in late January 2017 didn't put it back on tight?  I don't know. Maybe in 2 weeks I'll be getting extensive engine work done again.  :angry22:
