Automatic transmission in manual mode

Hi everybody,

I have MY2015 Fiat Freemont (EU version of Dodge Journey) 3,6 AWD. I noted quite strange thing in the automatic transmission. In manual mode, it does not automatically shift down to gear 1 when the vehicle stops when the engine is not yet heated up to operating temperature. Then when the engine is heated, it works normally. Is this some type of protection of the transmission or fault?

In general, the manual mode does not downshift unless the computer feels it is necessary. It is best to drive in automatic mode unless you need control of the shifting for some specific reason. From the owners manual:

Mostly the transmission will stay in the manually

selected ratio, however:

− If the system detects powertrain overheating, the

transmission will revert to the automatic shift mode

and remain in that mode until the powertrain cools off.

− If the system detects a problem, it will disable the

AutoStick mode and the transmission will return to

the automatic mode until the problem is corrected.

I was playing around with mine one day and was in 5. Came to a light, so I had to stop. Forgot to shift back to 1. It did take off in 5, but very slowly!

Mine will downshift if I forget to.

If I feel like driving in manual mine kicks into 1 most times when I'm sitting at a red light, sounds good also with my magnaflows. Downshift sounds sweet too but funny at the same times cause it's a man van haha. I've won a few Street races around town in manual second and third gar if you step on it feels great hahah
