Dxydarling
Please bare with me, I'm new here. We are trying to diagnose our problem without cost of dealer. This car has been in for too many issues, and of course nothing recalled on mine...go figure. We have read numerous threads on starting issues. Issue started last week. When trying to start it will just click, I have power to the rest of car. Will respond and start when jumped, Battery is a year old and holds a charge both alternator and battery replaced at the sametime. We replaced those when the alarm would automatically get a mind of its own, havent had the issue, until a few weeks ago with little chirps. We even tried the put it in neutral to start and that's a no go. Any advice?
bramfrank
If it starts when jumped the problem has nothing to do with the state of anything other than the battery and it's connections. I would imagine that either there is a corroded connection on the cable that goes from the jumper block to the battery or that your new battery has insufficient capacity or voltage (perhaps oe cell is shorted out). Take a voltmeter and check the battery voltage with the ignition off. Then check the voltage with the ignition on. Then they to start it and check the voltage while that is happening. Next: Jump start the vehicle and measure the voltage with the engine running. An idle battery should show about 12.6 volts Under accessory load it should not drop below 11 volts at an absolute minimum It should show about 14.2 volts while charging. If the battery voltage shows low, it could be bad, or the alternator may not be charging properly If the charging voltage shows low then you need to look into the alternator. larryl
Dxydarling
Thanks Bramfrank for the response, have had the battery tested in(running) after its jumped and out of the car no voltage change. That was our first thought bad battery. While it was out cleaned up all terminals, put it back in and she started right up. Went to check it today and it wouldn't start. Boyfriend said with voltage meter all was ok and the Alternator was getting power. I'm just lost on the whole ordeal.
Dxydarling
So we have decided it might be the remote start draining the battery, I did try and start it the other day from I side the house and it never started. So working on disarming that and we will take it from there.
OhareFred
I dont see how the remote start would drain anything. The signal is sent to the bcm and then it starts. I recall there was something about a wire loom that can be corroded and cause various things to not shut down. Have you checked to see if there is a draw when the car is shut down? A small draw is normal, but if its a big draw something is not shutting down. try searching the forum for that, I know it has been discussed several times. jkeaton
Dxydarling
Thanks, we are trying to figure this thing out. It's frustrating to no end. Will check the draw.
OhareFred
Electrical issues on newer cars are always a pain...good luck... jkeaton
OhareFred
Was the recall for the key fobs done? jkeaton
Dxydarling
My Journey just so happens didn't fall under the recall for some damn reason. Still trying to figure that one out. We play around with it, fuses and odds and ends and see what's going on.
Armando G
The reality is that we can all try to guess what the problem could be. If it isn't a common issue, which this does not seem to be, every guess could be wrong and ultimately costly. Even with a replaced alternator, the 'new' alternator could still be the issue. If you can get it running with a jump, there is basically a drain somewhere. Best bet is to take it to an electrical specialty shop and let them use their expensive equipment to find the issue for you. If they are wrong, they will need to try again on their dime. Even if you pay for a diagnosis and do the work yourself, you will still save a very valuable amount of time (and headache). Electrical issues are not like getting a flat tire. You'll never have to guess which tire to replace. Electrical, try and figure out which wire or 50+ electrical component is causing the issue. If you've tested the basics, hand out over to an expert. Good luck. jkeaton and OhareFred
AmyB
I am having the same issue with my 2010 Journey. Brand new battery, new starter and alternator. Did a reading and it says low voltage but no clue what’s causing it. Cleaned everything as well.
OhareFred
Well, did you do a test for a parasitic draw? A known issue is the Bluetooth not shutting off and draining the battery...l larryl
AmyB
Hmmm...not sure if they did or not. Going to have them check that. Thanks. Edited January 5, 2021 by AmyB
OhareFred
If you get a low voltage indicator while the car is running, you may have a bad alternator or bad connections at the alternator. Why did you change the battery and alternator? Were they bad or just guessing?
AmyB
This started a year ago and I was told it was alternator and had to do a belt. No issues since. But by spring it started where it would start and was having issues boosting so changed the battery since a lot of what was on the car was original. It stopped doing it when I changed the battery and then out of nowhere before Xmas it started again.
OhareFred
Have you checked your vin for recalls? There was one for the drivers door wire loom, one for the ignition win module/fobs, could also be the BCM. At 10/11 years electrical issues crop up and can be a nightmare trying to track them down.... jkeaton and 2late4u 1
